The Family Stone Anyone?

I've only seen a trailer for 'NLtHs', but it looks a hell of a lot like the Puerto Rican version of 'The Family Stone'. Has anyone here seen both of these flicks? Are they as similar as I suspect?

I love Alfred Molina and Freddy Rodriguez, so I'll probably watch it anyway...

reply

It's a holiday film. Most are similar. But this one seems to have some drama and some special meaning into it.

I can't wait to watch it.

reply

I have seen both films now and yes there were pretty obvious similarities. Both films have drama, beatrice, if you haven't seen Family Stone. I did like FS better though.

If you watch this trailer closely...it looks nothing like the family stone http://filmcrave.com/movie_page_main.php?id=26498

Erm...I have this really ancient dial-up connection, so that link won't get me anywhere I'm afraid!

I realize that the film won't be a complete rip-off, and it's sure to be good with Molina in it. I was only made suspicious by Debra Messing's character, an uptight career woman who eventually loosens up when exposed to her boyfriend's wacky family. This struck me as very similar to SJP's character in 'TFS'.

But I haven't seen it yet, so I'll reserve judgment until I do...

Being a whiteboy from Massachusetts I should think that Family Stone is the better of the two, but nope. Nothing Like the Holidays is actually a stronger film, funnier, more heartfelt and has more edge to it. This one really surprised me.

reply

Yeah, similar. Very Home for the Holidays-ish too.

^ But it is a great cast.

Yes, noah, I too thought of Home for the Holidays. Big time. I LOVE that one. I watch it every year around Thanksgiving.

reply

I've seen them both and they are very similar. However, this one is not quite the tear jerker that TFS was.

reply

I have seen them both too and they are nothing alike....Debra's character is not as uptight as SJP character in FS.....A Matter of fact she is very nice to the family where SJP's character in FS was kind of rude to the family....Plus it is definitely not as sad as FS.Both are good movies.

Sig- Not having an open mind is a good thing to lose

reply

Mimance, yeah towards the very end I was waiting for the One Year Later bit across the screen just like in Stone.

Home for the Holidays by Jodie Foster ?

I wouldn't say they are the same besides the "family" aspect but other than that...two different films

daveramsey.com "Best thing to ever happen to us" Are you weird too?

reply

I thought they were pretty similar, *spoiler* both involving a parent's last christmas

Last 2 movies I have seen: Nothing Like the Holidays and The Invisible
Kristen's Mafia

NLTH was more subtle and ambigous in that aspect. *Spoiler* We know he has cancer, but whether he lives or dies is left to our imagination. In a way, it is better that family stone because we have family that is struggling whether or not he'll die. In Family Stone, we know she will die and the family gets ready. It is harder to deal with the possibility that he'll die than with the real thing. The doubt causes a bigger strain.

There are some resemblances but 'Nothing Like The Holidays' is much better than 'Family Stone'.

'The Family Stone' had a good cast but it got disastrous in the second half and the overall acting was ruined too.
