I really like all the actors in this movie and it looks like something cute to see over Christmas.
However...
It bothers me that Elizabeth Pena is suppose to pass for JL's mother. In reality she is only a few years older than he is. I know that actors play older or younger characters all the time, but they look like brother and sister, not mother and son. Alfred Molina doesn't look old enough to be JL's father either.

I totally agree. I remembered her from La Bamba and Batteries Not Included. I looked her up on IMDB because I thought there was no way she could be old enough to play their mother. I wonder how she feels about this.

I completely agree! I came onto IMDB just to see if her birthdate was listed. Can't BELIEVE they cast her to be a woman who is supposed to be in her 60's. She looks YOUNGER than JL, even though he is 3 years younger than Elizabeth. I've always liked her, so I'm glad to see her in a higher profile movie, but the casting is truly absurd!

shareBy their marriage timeline it seemed like John was supposed to be about 35 or 36, and the parents were probably married young, so I figured she did a good job passing for 55, although John still looks about 40. I couldn't figure out Luis Guzman though - at 52 years old he was supposed to be the nephew?

Also, in response to the original poster, there are people in their late twenties playing teenagers on tv all the time, so if someone is a good actor, they can play someone much younger or older than themselves. I think she did a good job.

Her real birth year is 1959. I am a BIG fan, have been since 1987. I cut out articles from magazines and such. She changed her birth year to 1961 a few years ago.
But that is still just a gap of 5 years, between Pena and JL. But it works in the film.
Guess how old Anne Bancroft really was when she filmed The Graduate? 36!!!!! Dustin Hoffman was 30. Again, it worked.

They may have been teens when they married.
And sometimes your kids can look old for thier age.
A lot of latin men don't age well.
I thought it would be awkward to watch them as mother and son but after a few minutes, they manage to pull it off well as you manage to forget the real age difference.

I haven't see the film and I wondered what part Luiz Guzman is playing. He is way too old to be either EP's or AM's child. AM is only threes years older and EP is is even younger than Guzman!

I think she pulled it off. They had a mother/son rapport, especially during the chainsaw scene when she kept yelling at him to put it down and go back in the house. Hahaha
