Great start but a HORRID end

This movie starts with real promise. But I cannot beleive the ending. It was so unbelievably bad. So rushed and so random. Just ruined it for me.

I'm so glad that other people think the same as me.

The first third of the film was quirky and interesting, the second third was slipping and not as interesting, and the last third of this movie was plain awful.

It's sad that Edward Norton's amazing dual performances was so wasted.

i found it neither rushed nor random; it fit with the tone of the picture...quirky and unexpected.

I just hate that we're left hanging about what he does about his jobs with Brown and Harvard. That's never resolved. Is it in the extended edition?

reply

Well, I left the movie with the impression that he decided to settle down and live in Oklahoma and run the grow house with that guy who saved his life.

He didn't have much to return to in Boston and he was obviously falling for the girl. The rival drug dealers were all dead so he probably just kept the family business going.

Also, it's plainly shown that the only reason he'd left in the first place was because he was embarrassed about where he came from and his family. By the end of the film, he had worked through his issues on this which implies that he'd more than likely stayed.

I don't know about him taking up the helm of the 'family business' though. My guess is that he left that to Bolger and probably tried to find work as a teacher at the local high school or, barring that, teaching at a college or university somewhere close by.

I couldn't agree more. This movie seemed from the opening that it was going to be a thought provoking, possibly emotionally stirring but still funny little film with some great acting and dialogue. It also had a good philosophical bend to it as well.
Then out of nowhere the killing kicks in. And as if that wasn't bad enough, suddenly we have this ridiculously random plot element of the orthodontist going nuts on a vigilante mission. He went from a laughable sort of over-talkative Seinfeldian character who is just a little annoying to the other characters to a crazed psycho killer just because someone he knew from synagogue got killed. Beyond implausible and brought the whole movie to an anti-climactic pre-ending.
Then for no good reason we get the arrow through the chest and then he sits there in recovery.

What the hell happened???

reply

He went there to get money from them, dude, not to kill anyone. Things just didn't work out quite right.

And how can you guys say the movie and the ending were entirely foreshadowed...almost to the point where you could GUESS the ending.

i totally agree. when they shot the guys in tulsa, that's when all plausibility went out the window. here we have a guy who is suppose to be a genius and instead of coming up with an actual plan he comes up with the stupidest plan on earth. it would have been a fine plan if it didn't involve murdering three men.once he killed those guys i knew brady was either going to jail or would end up dead but the fact that he killed them in the first place didn't make sense for his character at all. then the arrow through the chest just so he would stay down there for the girl? ridiculous. everything fell a part in the stupidest and laziest way possible.

Brady never planned on killing Pug and his men. He wanted to try to talk it out and make some kind of deal equitable to both parties. However, he understood that Pug was a criminal and that Pug would probably try to strong-arm him into doing something he didn't want to do. So, he made the decision ahead of time that, if push came to shove, he'd have to kill them or be killed himself. That's not murder, that's self defense.

And guess what? That's EXACTLY what happened in the film.

BTW, Brady was the one that had to kill Pug and his men and subsequently was shot by the orthodontist and died. Bill is the one who got shot with the crossbow and lived. You do know that Norton played twins in this movie, don't you?

Well, I disagree. The beginning talks so lovingly about weed, that it practically forces you to want some. So you smoke up. Then after you're plenty high, the weird *beep* starts happening. I swear I went in to full blown freakout mode when he stabbed him with the menorah. I think I did it right...

I agree the end was over the top, The first half of the movie seem like a dark comedy, I fell asleep mid way though so when i did wake up surprised to see that crazy orthodontist, Way kill of one of the twins? just ruined a quirky movie didnt need to go so serious
