Can someone explain?

I just watched this today and thought it was a really cute, funny series. But there seemed to be some "Downton Abbey" inside jokes involving the two principals (i.e., a Julian Fellows production set in a large manor house), who of course were also the principals in "D.A." However, this series was filmed several years earlier. What gives?

Those are "Downton Abbey" inside jokes, and I loved them.

According to the book on the making of "Downton Abbey", the series took some time to put together. Since the episode of "Freezing" with the "DA" references was in 2008, and "DA" came out in 2010 (with casting, filming, etc. having begun much earlier), it's possible that Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern had already been signed to play husband and wife in it. There were quite a few inside jokes in "Freezing"; really got a kick out of it.
