I just started playing it about 45 minutes ago. I like it. I thought it was strange it didn't start at Jordan College, but starts in the North, then goes back to tell the tale of two months before. Maybe they thought kids would think it was boring if they didn't get hooked in with action and the bear right away. But it seems to be a good game.
I like movie or TV based games, and I'd say half my video game collection is based on some franchise. I know people always say they suck, but I enjoy them because they're always a nice mix of action and adventure, with characters you want to play as. The best is the Order of the Phoenix game, because you're really immersed in Hogwarts, without the video game elements that take you out of the story (like games where you collect a chicken leg randomly in a trunk to get energy, lol). So to that extent, Golden Compass does have video game lements, but most games do.
Anyway, so far I'm just at the start of the Jordan College part, in Lyra's room. I like that it's an adventure game with tasks, and not one where you walk along and bad guys by the dozen just keep popping out to fight (it's not a "brawler" like the Return of the King game). The voices are good with the real actors from the movie. My only complaint so far might be that there's not a free-look button. You can look around a bit with Pan's ermine view, but I like a free-look so I can completely turn around and absorb the nice world the artists have created.
I've been enjoying the game too. It's really not that strong as a game in its own right, but if you're a fan of the book and/or film, then I think it's worthwhile.
You get to see and explore some scenes that didn't make it into the film, and some that are more liberal interpretations of the book. I'm appreciating some of the film's design work a bit more having explored the environments in the game. I'm seeing things in the film clips that I didn't notice before. The game designers themselves did good design work for stuff not in the film. They clearly paid good attention to the books.
The music's good, and some of the cut scenes are rather impressive. Shame about some of the dodgy voice acting (I'm looking at you, Serafina "Pekula"), and a few inconsitencies in the plot - where they're veering between the film and book versions. Also, dæmon implementation is ropey - some people don't have dæmons, and many dæmons travel too far on their own.
If you go into this expecting a "game" you might be disappointed. It's more of an interactive version of the story.
I'm currently replaying, trying to find all the alethiometer symbols - I'm short of four (1 each for Bird, Tree, Chameleon and Sun(?)). I'm assuming that if I find them all, I can unlock the featurettes. I also think I need to unlock deception games C.
If anyone wants to give me subtle hints, I'd appreciate it.
Haha, I need to unlock stuff! I'm re-playing it, to try to get everything perfect... nothing's unlocking! I liked the game, just because it accompanies the book nicely.
