Crappy subtitles or is this movie impossible to translate?

Just watched this at a friends place and I really liked the movie even though I actually had a hard time understanding the nuances of it. I mean, the subtitles sometimes barely made sense or was it cause too much gets lost in translation in this movie? Seems like there was a lot of wordplay in french. Or did I just watch a really bad copy?

"Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down. Makes her home."

Going off on a longshot, a translator would really have to take the cake, in order to make a slam dunk translation of this movie.

just watched, and I'm like yours, some of time confusing with the subtitles. Even I look out another subtitles in the subscene, but that's the same perfect one :)

Whut?

I bought a British copy and most of the subtitles seemed understandable. But translating is a tricky business due to slang, puns, cultural references, etc.

Plus different companies in different countries may provide different English subtitles.

"Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down. Makes her home." That wasn't from the copy of "Micmacs" you watched, was it?

reply

There was a lot of slang and a lot of puns, but I thought on the whole the translator made a very good job of replicating the puns in English.

Which subs are the better ( or real) ones? I'm British.

See how NODLABS differ from FH's, which are apparently "Pal DVD" and "Bluray".:

Hmm... I just noticed the NODLABS subs have a quite a lot of spelling funk ups..

like:
7
00:03:43,560 --> 00:03:44,920
You're ín troul}le too.

8
00:03:45,039 --> 00:03:46,840
l don't mínd íf you're around.

Ignoring that, they are still both quite different from one another..

NODLABS:
--------

14
00:04:12,294 --> 00:04:15,255
*You'll come with me to the police?
*No.

15
00:04:15,547 --> 00:04:16,548
*Why?

16
00:04:17,883 --> 00:04:20,302
*I killed Charles Ringan.

17
00:04:20,594 --> 00:04:22,596
*Would you tell the Commissioner?

18
00:04:23,597 --> 00:04:25,307
*Yes, if you ask it

19
00:04:27,518 --> 00:04:29,019
*I don't want to.

20
00:04:29,311 --> 00:04:32,731
* Listen, I'm very tired.
I feel quite stiff.

21
00:04:33,023 --> 00:04:37,402
* I killed a man and I witnessed
the murder of a poor soul.

22
00:04:37,694 --> 00:04:41,156
* It's all because Geiger
sang Carmen.

23
00:04:41,448 --> 00:04:45,285
* If I told, your home
would be invaded by police ...
