Saw this last night...

at the Scottish premier in Glasgow, and met Jeunet, too.

This might be his best film yet guys, it bridges Delicatessen and Amelie beautifully, and I HIGHLY reccomend it. My review for the University paper should be online soon, I'll post it.

You wont be disappointed with this film. Boon is the new Tati.

reply

Boon the new Tati ? I hardly think so !
As for the film I really don't think it's Jeunet's masterpiece on the contrary, I reckon it must be his less profound picture. It is good entertainment though, beautifully crafted as always with Jeunet.

reply

Utterly and devastingly brilliant ! I was gripped for every single second. I didn't want it to end.

Just checked my vote history. Out of 500 films, I have given 7 a 10 rating - 2 of them are directed by Jeunet.

I saw this film the other day and like other people, I can only praise this film with the highest of regards.

While the film is not as deep as Amelie and City of Lost Children, Micmacs is very endearing, heart warming, a real humanist story.

It's really just a story of how the little people, the true minorities on the fringes of society, can topple and bring down a major corporation. A story of how love and friendship can overcome greed and envy.

Whilst that statement may seem simplistic, almost reductive, the film is so endearing, you really appreciate how the gang carry off such a cunning plan.

Special mention to Yolande Moreau as the head of the family. She gets better with every performance and I was really happy to see her in such a significant role. Her little back story is so moving.

Everyone should see this, it really warms your soul.

reply

I thought it was an excellent film, very funny and yet moving.

It didn't occur to me while I was watching but having read the review posted above, the protagonist does indeed employ (with great expertise) many of the skills utilised back in the days of silent cinema.

And just like the reviewer - I watched the film in Glasgow (but not at the premiere)

reply

Cool. Going tomorrow to see it during a Film Festival. Haven't seen any other films by the Director.

Can you fly this plane?
Surely you can't be serious.
I am serious, and don't call me Shirley

reply

Best film? Hardly.

I did like it in the beginning, it had a great atmosphere, fun characters and I loved the references to silent comedies, but it's not enough to keep the movie going and it starts dragging its feet about halfway.

Now this wouldn't be such a big problem if the ending was halfway decent, that's where the main problem of this movie is: the piss poor ending.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

Youtube, f'ing Youtube brings down a couple of illegal arms dealers, I'll repeat that: a f'ing video posted on Youtube is used in court to convict the two arms dealers for illegal weapons trade and probably crimes against humanity judging by what the video depicts.

The whole movie leads to this mind numbingly stupid conclusion, if that was their plan they could've ended the whole movie earlier by recording the conversations they had to set up the meeting at the train station.

It's not absurd, it's not imaginative, it's just plain stupid and really brings this movie down.

SOME SPOILERS:

Then, my sweet, dear s***-twit, you wouldn't have much of a film, now would you? Bazil and his cohorts had to "beat down" the dealers by making them fight each other. The victor in a war is the one that stands aside, while the other two are fighting each other. When Bazil got kidnapped by the two, the gang employed plan B: expose the two to the world.

I remember an interview with Clint Eastwood a number of years back about one of his movies. The interviewer asked about a plot hole like this. They asked, "Why didn't the character just do this or that at the beginning?"

Clint responded by saying, "Then there wouldn't have been any movie."

I agree with antonp9. As I sat watching it I couldn't help thinking, "This is the movie Tati would have made if he were working today."

BTW, did Julie Ferrier remind anyone else of Giulietta Masina (La Strada, Nights of Cabiria, Juliet of the Spirits, etc)?

I loved this film as well. It's a solid 8/10 in my book.

As for Dany boon being the "new Tati," that's sort of a kiss of death, but he certainly stands on his own here. A delightful film with a delightful lead.
