Why the R rating?

Just curious as to why this movie is rated R? IMDB (which I rely on for content advisory before I show my family any movie) doesn't have a parental advisory up yet.
I know Amelie was rated R but for me, that was stretching a bit (could've been pg13, with what American films rated pg13 are like these days).
So is the R rating for sex, drugs, violence? Is it really that bad?

I was quite surprised at the R rating, but I assumed it was the simulated porn scene. This film seems solidly PG-13 to me – a good film for mature teenagers who know French or are willing to read subtitles.

A millisecond shot of hard-R violence as well.

The film is rated 12 in the UK (pretty much PG-13). I found it to be quite extreme for a "12" though, such as the two sex scenes, a very long close-up of a guy's face while having an orgasm and two guys getting shot in the head (which is quite rare to see in a PG-13 rated film).

I think when Basil is shot, the blood dripping down his face from the wound was quite graphic.
