What was the point of Kate doing research on Ester? (Spoilers)

Other than to have that whole Ester is an old woman line in the movie, Kate spends an absurd amount of time researching into Ester instead of just policing her. HELL, Kate seems to believe Ester is a murderous psychopath but she leaves her alone with her daughter?

Kate is so desperate to find information about Ester instead of protecting her children from Ester... That she believes Ester tried to kill her son yet is stupid enough to take her eyes off of ester is just beyond stupid. Again, ANOTHER scene that could have been avoided if she wasn't researching ester's past was when Ester set fire to the treehouse.

Most of the movie could have been avoided if Kate well... acted like a mother who was scared for her children. (Oh, and also divorced that idiot scumbag she called a husband. I cheered when he got his justified end)

Well she had very little info regarding Esther's past. Her husband had already been charmed by Esther to the point where he firmly believed Kate was wrong. I agree that she should have kept a better eye on her children. Esther after all was likely watching them much of the time to see what they might tell her. Or if she tried to intervene, she would play another dirty trick again.

But the problem is that nothing Kate turns up has any effect at all over her husband, if anything it make him think she is more delusional for being so obsessed with it.

This is one of those story telling devices that doesn't really make sense, having characters do research so the audience begins to learn about the story.

I thought that ultimately she was looking for proof...remember that her husband had given her the ultimatum to either leave for rehab or he was going to kick her out...either way she wouldn't have been there to protect her children.
So she needed something to point her husband to in order to be believed.
