sword

What with all the sword references so far, I guess we're not supposed to guess that the last episode is obviously gonna be some hokey crap story about excalibur.
Bet you anything that when they find it, wherever it is, it'll be in a dark place with a single crack of sunlight shinning on it from a hole in the ceiling.

reply

I hope you're wrong, but I suspect you are correct. They really will be that obvious and cliched.

The sword references are an annoyingly desperate (and feeble) device to try and manufacture some sense of build-up. But the whole show is so abysmally badly done that all they're building up to is another crushing disappointment.

I doubt I'll still be watching by then.

reply

Stop watching it now then KitEllis cos you're starting to annoy me. Bleating about a show on a message board ain't gonna make it better.

As the sword, I hope it's not Excalibur cos that's story's been done to death. But... this is Bonekickers so I'm gonna pencil in 'excalibur night' for that episode! So far I've been most unimpressed with the weaponry used in this show. The sword we keep seeing in the flashbacks doesn't look very impressive, in fact it looks like the kind of thing you can get in a sword shop for £150 or so!

Wieldy, I've accepted and apologised for my numerous character flaws, but you can't chastise me for commenting about a show on a message board. I know it ain't gonna make it better, but it allows me to vent my spleen. That's why these boards are here: so people can state their opinions and then get flamed for them.

Especially don't tell me off for criticising the show and then do the exact same thing! (Or was your comment about the sword in some way supposed to be holding a mirror up to me?)

Whichever way you cut it, the show is cheap and not very good. I am allowed to say that here, and give my reasons in as long-winded and pompous a way as I choose.

When my comments become personal or insulting, however, I am in the wrong and always quick to apologise - as I have done.

I'm sorry if my posts have annoyed you. That was not my intent. I am aware of my plethora of failings, but still think Bonekickers is crap.

I won't stop watching it yet, as you suggest, because I still hope it gets better, and as a huge fan of Adrian Lester I feel compelled to watch as much as I can. But when it disappoints, as it inevitably will, I reserve the right to bitch about it on a message board that has been set up for the purpose of discussing the programme.

And I make no apology for that. (Although I'll apologise as ever if my comments cause offence).

There are sword shops? Where? Wow. Would love to live in that particular crime-free neighbourhood...

Re: the whole sword thingy. Excalibur is SO gonna be the thing that Dr Magrat (or whatever her damn name is) is getting all worked up about. "Follow the Gleam"? Follow the plot device, more like.

As Monty Python put it, just because some watery tart, lying in a pond, lobs a scabbard at you is no basis for a system of government. No basis for a story-arc, either...

Excalibur Night. Duly pencilled in...

There are sword shops all over the place and numerous quality ones on the internet. As a collector of replica weapons I can say that owning a replica Excalibur or various other historical and fantasty weapons has nothing to do with crime.

Wieldy, I was just being snarky (sorry, that's just my sense of humour)

I completely agree with your sentiments regarding the ownership of fantasy weapons. I'm a black belt in Aikido, and my father is a master. I've spent my entire life training with swords/knives/bo(similar to an English Longstaff) and unarmed combat. The problem with swords is that they have one purpose and one purpose only - as a weapon. It's the misconception that anyone who has a sword, be it a fantasy weapon or not, is gonna go completely fruit-loops in the Post Office and start lopping heads off. Swordsmanship is all about disipline and self control, not losing it big-time. Plus they are beautiful objects and can be admired without the need to draw blood.

In the present climate where anything shiny and pointy is seen as the scurge of society, I'm beginning to wonder if the continued references to swords on CrapKickers is a good or a bad thing...

Legislation has recently been brought in that makes it illegal to sell samauri swords. I wonder how long it will be before our scaredy-kat government expands that legislation to include ornamental swords?

No worries Kescross.

I know all about the current sword law. I'm a historical fencer (which is sort of a cross between reenatcing without costumes and sports fencing). The sword law has caused my club all kinds of problem as the law doesn't just cover Samurai swords. Technically it covers any blade over 50cm long with a curve in the blade, this covers the main weapon I fence with, the Infantry Sabre. There's some changes being made to the law soon to clarify the description but the exceptions for the law, reenactors, martial artists, actors etc still aren't properly defined in the law. This needs rectifying.

In my opinion the law is totally ridiculous and only really affects law abiding collectors and reenactors. I agree with banning those crappy Samurai swords that you can buy for £30 but (as usual) the Government has gone too far with the scope of the law. We shall just have to wait and see how this situation develops.

Speaking of swords, I noticed a stange inconsistency in the 2 eps so far...

In the episode 2, (regarding those severed hands) they remark that not even the sharpest of blades can slice cleanly through a bone. But in episode 1, we see that crazy dude behead that guy in one swoop.

I don't mind too much; it's just one of those things that I find interesting. Ho hum.

reply

I think a decapitation is probably not a clean cut, the bone edges are probably ragged as hell, unlike the severed hands which (i think we're supposed to believe) had laser like edges, also, I remember reading once that the human head isn't really attached to the body with any strength, it just sits on our shoulders mostly attached by soft tissues, the bones in the neck offer next to nothing for support or strength and are barely attached to each other....I think a head gets lopped off mostly by momentum and strength of the swing, not so much the sharpness of the blade.

reply

The blade makes a big difference, a sharpened Katana with it's curved blade would be far more effective than say, a dull broadsword. A skilled practitioner would be able to sever a head with clinical precision.

Yes. Also note the quotations from Tennyson's Merlin and the Gleam!
It'll be Excalibur or Arthur's tomb…
