Saw this movie on Friday. My review. [Contains spoilers]

Feeling very generous, I'd say this movie is mediocre, at best, yet most of the theater loved what was being shown. I didn't get it. Stuff like Akshay Kumar (Happy Singh) chasing a chicken in the beginning of the movie and taking a few falls while he's at it is STILL funny to people? In fact it's not just funny, what I just described is actually hilarious to the majority of the public. They even clap while laughing. So what exactly is my problem? If people are laughing and enjoying this movie then why am I sitting in the corner with a frown on my face, almost angry at how much people are actually having fun? I'm not a bitter man. I don't wish bad on others. So why this sudden anger as others enjoy? It's because of the standard set by the industry in terms of comedies and how easily it is accepted by us. How about some originality for a change? It's the same stuff over and over and over and over again and the public is more than happy with it. WHY? Why does almost every hindi comedy have to end with an absolutely ridiculous 30 minute circus-like scene, involving people falling (always a crowd favorite), doing random acts of stupidity and just looking silly? I can understand if this was funny the first or second time, but to see almost every hyped "comedy" end like this, and people gladly accepting it, is sickening.

Akshay Kumar play's Happy Singh, a character who loves to help anyone in need but in the process tends to cause some havoc along the way. Now, don't get me wrong, the character did have some promise. Akshay Kumar is a funny actor with some great comedic timing. Unfortunately, even he couldn't save this disaster. Though admitting that he is helpful, Happy's fellow villagers have gotten tired of his antics and have decided to send him to Australia so that he can get Lucky (played by Sonu Sood) back and re-unite him with his family. Of course, Lucky is the real king in the movie, but as Happy goes to get him back he finds himself in the middle of a gunfight (Lucky's life is constantly threatened by rival gang-members) where Lucky gets heavily injured and therefore Happy gets to be the king while the real king recovers. So, the stage is set. What now?

Get ready for some of the cheesiest scenes possible. While Happy has to act as the king and give orders and get work done, his method is obviously different than Lucky's, and seeing that his fellow gang-members are also influenced by his nature and deliver some of the most god-awful lines you'll hear in a movie. Just as they are about to take of business in their style, they get influenced by Happy's nature and tend to take another route.

All this seems to normal for a hindi comedy, though. Where exactly is the ridiculous story-line that is attached with funny movies all the time? Worry not, it's here. Before I get to that, though, I think it's time we all agree on the fact that Katrina Kaif is drop dead gorgeous but her acting skills don't quite fetch her the same marks as her looks. I mean, she's a major part of the movie, but she just doesn't do anything to stand out. It's almost as if she doesn't even try. I wish directors would actually take her and rough her up a little and get that inner actor, if it exists, to come out because as of now it seems that the people involved in projects involving her are more than happy to use her what she is, i.e., just a pretty face. Either she can't act or directors just don't care enough and feel her presence alone is worth the money paid. And I'm not just talking about this movie. Yeah, she's hot, but come on. Let's see some real acting. Then again, I may be taking out my anger on the wrong role. After all, she was playing Happy Singh's love interest in a movie called Singh is Kinng. I doubt if even the most talented of actresses could have made the character more enjoyable.

So, yeah, let's get back to the ridiculous, yet expected, story-line of hindi comedies. Whilst acting as the present king of the gang, Happy Singh and his fellow gang-members must act as servants of the very house they live in as well. This does amount to a couple of somewhat funny scenes, mostly thanks to Kiron Khere, but in the end it's just not enough. Nothing could save this movie.

What disappointed me the most in this movie, though, was how Pappi (played by Javed Jaffrey) was handled. I had such a good feeling about this character as the movie started. The kings brother is deaf in the left ear and partially blind! Apart from some stupid scenarios I knew I would get, I genuinely thought this character could be pretty funny. There's something about Javed Jaffrey playing such characters which made the whole situation very inviting. Unfortunately, though, almost as if the writers were trying to be as less creative as possible, Pappi did some the dumbest things in the movie. Let's not forget that he did the same things again and again and again and again. A complete waste of a potentially funny character. He essentially had one "joke" which he repeated throughout the movie. What didn't help matters was that the "joke" was terribly unfunny in the first place, so to have it repeated again and again was torture. Just a terrible disappointment.

Om Puri does reasonably well in his role as Happy's english speaking companion, but with the overall writing being so shoddy an actor can only do so much with the character. I understand why comedies like Singh is Kinng are made. As "creative" as they are, there's a HUGE market for them. I wouldn't really blame Anees Bazmee, as much as I was tortured by him in the theater, because if he didn't deliver such a movie someone else would. The Indian public wants movies like Singh is Kinng. They like seeing Akshay Kumar falling down and laughing as if the writer had come up with the cleverest of jokes. My problem is that I just wish people like me were looked after as well and apart from comedies only catering to such simple humor, something deeper, wittier and funnier would be delivered every now and then as well. This is main reason I get irked when I see people high-fiving each other and laughing hysterically as the main hero slips. RAISE YOUR STANDARDS, FOR GOD'S SAKE. How long will you continue to find such stuff funny? Even though this movie will no doubt be a huge success and the majority will love it, I for one will voice my opinion in an attempt to reach the people responsible for such garbage.

IN SHORT: Watch this if you have a gun pointed at your head and for some insane reason the person holding the gun wants you to sit through this torture of a movie. Perhaps he had to endure the same? Otherwise, steer clear. Even if you're easily amused, I'd suggest you not to support movies such as this one. I rarely feel like walking about of a movie without completing it and if I hadn't been with three other people there is no way in hell I would have watched this till the end. Everything was predictable. The acting was average, at best. The writing was absolutely horrible. I'd give this movie a 0 if Kiron Khere hadn't made me laugh out loud while trying to put butter on her chappati with a killers knife. That was my only laugh throughout the movie.

I haven't seen this film (and I won't), but I fully agree with you. I saw Anees Bazmee's previous that was Welcome and saw the kind of mass response it received.

It's tragic ...that the public laps this stuff up, but we can't turn into misanthropes, now can we?
