So, smoking can send you to hell?

The theme of the movie is that all these people are in some sort of purgatory and if they act badly one more time, they instantly go to hell, right? But all the first guy did was go outside to get a smoke. And, yeah, the "steward" did tell them to not smoke, but really, is smoking a ciggy a big enough sin to condemn you to the everlasting barbeque? The devil is harsh, man!

I hate smokers. but I agree with the TC. just seemed kinda silly to kill him just for lighting up.

He broke the rules. In a situation like the one they were in. You obey the rules. Pretty simple really.

reply

wow you hate SMOKERS??

reply

So if your father would start smoking, you would suddenly hate him? Are you sure you know what the word ''hate'' means?

If it really did happen that way a lot less people would die of smoking-related diseases! Wish it had happened to the idiot who flicked his ash all over my new white trousers the other night. I quite enjoyed the irony!

I believe the point is that the ship is your last chance, you're someone who isn't entirely evil, just bad in some way - you're savable, if you chose to be so.

If you chose not to be so, ie by breaking the rules as they're given to you, you just used up your last chance. The infraction itself might be seen as minor, but it's the inability to obey the rules that it symbolizes that screws you.

reply

Yeah, I think you're right. I also think that the no smoking rule was actually just specific to the guy who smoked, it was his test. As he was heading out to light up, he said something like he never obeyed rules in his life, that's what got him in prison, and he wasn't about to start now.

Haven't seen the movie, so you can jump on it for that, but I don't really care what he did before... condemning someone forever for lighting up is just stupid. That's what it comes down to and I don't see how that can ever be justified.

Probably not gonna bother watching it, if this is the "morality" of the film.

That scene wasn't about whether or not he smoked. It was about obedience. The rule was "not to smoke" he broke the rules, so he paid with his life. If the rule was not to eat cheese and he did anyway, he would have been punished with breaking the rules. It doesn't mean eating cheese is a crime.

reply

well that was his rule because he lived a life of never following the rules and constantly breaking the law.

That was his test. Obediance. He failed.

Technically speaking, he didn't pay with his life....he was already dead to begin with ! he he he

anyway, given that there is a lot of fire in hell, he would not have trouble lighting up in the future...wonder if they have ciggies in hell, though.

reply

I guess it was a sin

Smoking doesn't send you to hell! It just makes you smell like you've been there.
