What a way to ruin a good thing..

This show can not be duplicated not at all!!!

I mean come on, there is no way that american tv can pull this off... not to mention the time this was mad was so much different than it is now... in 2008 an american version of this just will not fly!!

cant redo the relationships and jokes...

the office was really the one of the only exceptions

I remember the same arguments tossed around before Steve Carell surprised us all... But I agree with you, the way that Spaced does what it does, well there's no way it would "work" to a massive US audience... After all, Family Guy sorta does it (not as well, of course) so audiences will be like "where's Quagmire? Meh, change the channel..."

Hang on a sec, are you saying Steve Carell did a good job????

The Office was a show built on awkward humour, and or jokes that weren't explicit and spoon fed.

Firstly the show shouldn't have been Americanised because that isn't the style of humour in America (e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g m-u-s-t b-e s-p-e-l-t o-u-t) If America wanted to do some other take, why bother calling it The Office, they could've just pretended it was a new show - hell no one would have noticed the loose and poorly replicated references.

Secondly Steve Carrell is a douche bag who one shouldn't have been cast in the role (if the show was to be known as The Office) and secondly should never be cast in any role other than those that involve (America's all-time favourite brand of humour) slapstick.

There was a post somewhere here that the show has been cancelled, probably for the best if any yanks have had input on the script (again, Americanising UK/Aus shows does not work - I thought the Aus version of Kath and Kim was bad until I saw the US version).

On another note would have been interesting to see Josh Lawson try on Tim's role though.

Steve Carrell is a douche bag

So very, very true (Ron something Anchorman film is a prime example).
This version of The Office is excruciating to watch but for entirely different reasons than that of the UK version.

repo136, YOU make me laugh.

Having seen the original Office in the UK plus all the specials, the US version has gone far beyond what the original series had achieved. UK comedy series in the main are short and sweet. There are no opportunities in the UK for US style syndication, and therefore big profits for networks, so shows get a very short run by comparison. The US version has over 100 episodes and therefore has stonger characters, a better ensemble cast, and for the most part far funnier scriptwriting.

The UK office will go down in TV history as the show that was the launch pad for the far better, sharper, more successful US version.

The trouble with the US market is that they have not heard the term 'less is more'.
Everything is produced the same. Once a good idea hits the tv screens everyone jumps on the bandwagon to emulate it, more sequels are made, everything is bled out until it just doesn't work any more.

Incidentally, robertcroxson , your statement that "the US version has over 100 episodes and therefore has stonger characters" is ludicrous. Since when does an abundance of shows equal stronger characters?

And 'quality control' are a good couple of words to have as well.

I'm with you on this repo. Robertcroxson, saying that because America has more episodes somehow means it's better is a ridiculous statement. It was Gervais and his team that decided they didn't want to keep doing the British version, because it would become too diluted, which by the sounds of it is exactly what has happened to the American version. You don't think the BBC were eager to snap up more of the same programme? Of course they were, and it would've taken the edge off an otherwise great show.

Oh and also, reworking Spaced is a very bad idea...

Are you f-ing kidding me? You speak of slapstick comedy as a purely American phenomenon while ridiculous comedic feces like Benny Hill STILL pollutes late night US air-waves. I'm not really a fan of either versions of The Office, but don't try to pretend that British television is so much smarter than American television. Both countries' television caters to the lowest common denominator. UK TV is just as retarded as US TV. I mean, Britain's Got Talent? F-ing blow my brains out already; it's unbelievably excruciating, and EVEN worse than our version of it (and, let us not forget what country vomited the Pop Idol franchise on the rest of the world).

Aside from that, I'm pretty neutral about the whole thing.

Try reading the post again mate, I didn't say it was limited to America, but simply it was America's favourite brand. If American's opened their hearts and minds to other forms then perhaps scriptwriters the world over would also, which would be doing the planet a huge favour.

Also Benny Hill isn't exactly a new production. I'm guessing that most writers who originally churned out that brand of of comedy either branched out into other forms or hung up their pens.

Spot on re the talent/idol shows - no matter who is responsible for them.

how about you explain to me how remaking something ruins the original?
because im pretty sure it wouldnt
the original isnt related to the remake, its not a sequel, its not the same cast, its a completely different story with the same name, thats all
yer being ridiculous

It's like natural light versus unnatural light, only everyone is asking "ASL?".

reply

Right, so if it's not related to the existing storyline, it's a new cast etc etc etc, then why try and pass it off as being related to the original show? Who's being ridiculous?

I almost came as a Shark actually, but then I realised that an Eagle was slightly better.
