The Company Dinner

I didn't understand why Derek and Jill were sitting across from each other at the company dinner which left an open seat next to Derek so that Nicole could sit next to him. Doesn't make any sense.

Only saw this now, hense the long gap in reply. Generally at dinner parties husband and wives don't sit next to each other as the hostess will want people to mingle and the conversation to flow. Usually the guest of honour (male) would be seated to the right of the hostess and the goh (female) at the host's right and then male and female alternatively. The hostess would have seated Derek and Nicole next to each other. She wouldn't have known about an affair or Jill's discomfort.
