Frankenweenie or Paranorman?

Which do you like better? I haven't seen Frankenweenie to make a legitimate criticism but I'll do once it reaches in our shores on OCT 17.

How would you rate the two from 1 to 10 which the latter being the highest? I'm so excited for Frankenweenie as I loved tim burton's corpse bride.

ParaNorman is a MUCH better movie than Frankenweenie. Burton's lost it, and it seems he is never getting it back. Too many chances gone to waste.

Hard to say as both had their fair share of good things and bad things....

I haven't seen Paranorman but I see what you mean about Frankenweenie not being quite fleshed out. After having seen it, I realized that there was almost nothing to this movie - boy has dog, boy loses dog, boy pulls a Frankenstein, everyone else pulls a frankenstein, the end. I feel like the movie needed more writing - more character development, more subplot, more main plot, more of everything. They didn't do much with the dog once he's resurrected. There should have been more quirks added in general to the movie - the characters, the plot, the writing, etc. It all felt too....straightforward and simple.

reply

Personally, I think the whole point of "Frankenweenie" was to be told straight-up and simplistic- reflective of the B & W shooting style and homage to the films it is paying tribute to. Relying more on pauses, beats, facial expressions, shadows, and limited or exaggerated movements at times. If it was more fluid and more fleshed out it would've seemed too convoluted, too modern. The subject matter of bringing the dead back to life, despite their choice, is already heavy as it is. I also think that having Sparky be a "simple" dog allows everyone in the audience to apply his/her own pet experiences to his character. If he had a bunch of quirks that were over-the-top or specific we wouldn't be able to necessarily relate- ie. like a cat of YouTube that does back flips, etc. Everyone in my audience was making comments like, "oh, my dog does this, and my dog does that". I think that's the point....

Love canadianfilm101 here. He or she captures the film and its genius.

What is it with people these days needing some overly complex, convoluted plot? No wonder movies are so bloated these days. Frankenweenie was a nice, simple story, whats wrong with that?

Do you know the way to Shell Beach?

reply

It was so simple that it got boring, really. But for kids the simplicity would be (I'm guessing) great. But compared to The Corpse Bride (which I think a lot of people were expecting this movie to reflect in a number of ways) it has as weaker plotline.

I guess it really comes down to what you are expecting before you sit down to watch it, but even expecting not too much at all I got bored fast.

ParaNorman is superior, but Frankenweenie is very good too, especially if you're familiar with all the horror movie homages. I recommend that people see both, but if they absolutely have to choose one, then ParaNorman.

Had to say overall I enjoyed Paranorman more mainly for its third act.

ParaNorman, but I love both.

Frankenweeine - 9/10
Paranorman - 5.5/10

I personally thought Frankenweenie was much better and is one of Burton's best. Paranorman was very disappointing.

Not say an opinion is wrong, but how is Frankenweenie better than ParaNorman? ParaNorman was much more advanced in character development, camera angles, voice acting, plot, and the animation was amazing.

Frankenweenie was very straighforward, and had really dated visuals. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing... in my opinion.

reply

What dated visuals?? It's called stop motion animation, which means every single frame is individually photographed. Of course real models are used, not CG.

reply

No duh, but it can be still dated. Compare the first Wallace and Gromit next to Coraline. The first Wallace and Gromit uses very dated techniques. Frankenweenie's stop-motion is running at a slower frame-rate and the models themselves are much more simplistic in design. The characters in Frankenweenie are designed in a much simpler process to make the models which gives them less flexibility and realism.

The facial models in ParaNorman are in the tens of thousands because of the sheer diversity. The facial models of Frankenweenie are much lower than that.

reply

This was deliberate as Tim learned from the Corpse Bride there is no point in puppet animation if it's too polished.

Frank also had a tiny budget compared to ParNorman.

reply

They did have a budget difference of around 20 million dollars so I guess that is a bit of a difference. But extremely polished puppet animation (my opinion) is also good in its own because it can make things look really nice and detailed. Unpolished can be good but it can also look lazy and sloppy. It doesn't always look sloppy but... it kind of ruins the mood at times. When it becomes obvious you are watching toys move it stops becoming a movie that you are immersed in and starts to feel like you are simply watching toys pretending to be characters. You watch a movie to watch a plot unfold and to feel like you are actually there, to lose the feeling of it actually happening is one of the most annoying things a movie can do.

reply

Yes, I agree with you about the design. Frankenweenie is just too plain and it doesn't completely accentuate Tim Burton's quirky style compare with his old works. Some parts of the story are also unrealistic, even as fiction. Paranorman is better in design and the story is compelling enough, at least for the first half of it. It dropped my expectation from the car chase scene until the movie ended.

Frankenweenie 5/10
Paranorman 7/10

In my opinion Frankenweenie was brilliant while Paranorman was, I would also say disppointing.

Frankenweenie-9/10
Paranorman- 4/10

ParaNorman: 9-10/10

FrankenWeenie: 7/10

ParaNorman was an amazing movie. I can say it is my favorite movie of the year (even more so than The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises). ParaNorman took a huge step in stop-motion animation. Visually, it is the best and most advanced stop-motion movie. And it has a really good plot as well.

Frankenweenie on the other hand almost feels like a step backwards. The characters are very stiff, their facial expressions are very simplistic, and the frame rate is much lower. On a technical standpoint, Frankenweenie is ancient compared to ParaNorman or even Coraline. Still a good movie, just not amazing.
