Will this be anything like the Adult Swim animation 'metalocalypse' (Detroit Metal City is an animation right?)?

I was thinking that this was a sequel to the movie Detroit Rock City.

Probably not a sequel to Detroit Rock City since this seems to be a japanese movie. An Anime possibly.
I wonder if they had to get permits from KISS to name this Detroit METAL City.

It is not related to Detroit Rock City, although the title may be a reference to it. As far as KISS goes, it will make more sense when you see it.
When the movie was introduced prior to screening at the Toronto Festival, they said it is currently the #2 movie in Japan, as the Manga book on which it is based is hugely popular.
I can see Hollywood remaking it and ruining it.

It's a live action movie and it's great fun, A trendy-obsessed singer/songwritr from the sticks goes to Tokyo but ends up helming a death metal group, which he hates.

It's not anime, it's live action. However, it is based on a manga about a guy in Tokyo who creates a metal band called Detroit Metal City.

They created an anime OAV series. Pretty much chronicles the entire manga episode by episode.

The manager in this movie reminded me of a character from metalocalypse, but beyond that no. This is a super funny movie though, especially if your in a metal band...check this movie out if you can!

Freakin' awesome movie! Did remind me of Metalocalypse at points. I expect they got Gene Simmons by showing him the script, 'cause it's a hilarious movie. My favourite bit was the lyrics from the DMC songs...

Not really when Detroit Rock City is about Kiss and he is the lead singer. Then Detroit Metal City by name is a homage to the song/band/movie, makes sense for them to pay more homage to him through them saying Jack is DMC's roots.
