I'm not sure it's so much a lack of original ideas - I'm sure writers are coming up with fresh and innovative stuff all the time... I think it's got more to do with companies only wanting to commit to making stuff that's fairly certain to be successful and making the mistake of assuming that a remake of something that's done well elsewhere in the world will automatically do well in America... Add to that the insularity of many Americans - their resistance to listening to people speaking English with non-American accents, let alone reading subtitles! - and you end up with a television industry that's very inward-looking and unimaginative... Obviously, some good television is still made in America. But, the last straw came for me when I heard about the remake of "Being Human" - how dare they insult one of the finest British television shows ever made by assuming they can just do a remake set in America?!
