Why is this canceled, while dumb/bad cartoons remain?

I get that this has been canceled to make room for live-action shows (which already makes no sense given the purpose of the channel), but why do shows like 'Total Drama Action' and 'Johnny Test' remain? They have dry plots, no humor, and generally don't appeal to either younger kids, teens, or adults whatsoever.

I'd point out too that Chowder and Flapjack both have higher scores here on average than either of the two aforementioned shows, by quite a bit too.

It's just my opinion, I just don't get why Chowder gets canned while crappy shows no one watches get to stay here.

I still watch cartoons quite frequently even at 18 now, since I do have a 12 year old little brother that likes me to spend time with him. I appreciate shows like Chowder and Flapjack since they do have humor that can even appeal to older people, even some sexual innuendo here and there. It's funny without being overtly provocative. I'm not a prude, but I'd prefer my little brother (and all impressionable kids) not to have to deal with being sexualized when they're already gonna go through that with peers at school.

More shows like Invader Zim (2001 Nick production) and Chowder/Flapjack would always be great. I definitely think Zim was one of those shows that works on two levels, for kids and for the teens/adults that watch it with them. Stuff like the Total Drama series isn't necessarily bad because of the cheap animation...it's just like they hire monkeys to write them. I don't know about most people, but I have no interest in rehashing all the stupid teenage drama that was all the worst parts of high school. ;) Even the sitcoms they show on Nickelodeon these days are just moronic. Drake and Josh glorifies a guitar-playing school flunkee who likes to womanize, iCarly is full of dumb teenage drama...I just know when I was 8-13 years old I didn't give a crap about teenage drama. I still don't, haha.

Is there any proof that it's actually canceled besides "some guy"? Because something where cancellation confirmation rumors were swirling in Aug, but still seems to show new episodes in Jan, usually that doesn't happen.

If it really is "canceled" as rumors say, I doubt it's because CN is trying to "make room." Chowder is one of their most successful series, and it's only been around for a couple years now.

I'm betting it has to do with Chowder's voice actor. If you caught the last new episode, the character Chowder only had one line, and it sounded... off. The downside to using child voice actors is that they go through puberty.
edit: If you read the other thread about cancellation you'll see several people pointing this out already.

They might not want to recast or age the character, and might be choosing to bring the series to a close instead. Most of the really good shows on CN that end don't always do so because of cancellation, but because the staff decides to move on to other things or for other more complex reasons besides "making room for crappy shows."

The creator of the show's blog had several posts indicating that the series was brought to an end prematurely and not at the choice of the show's cast and crew. It seemed to support the whole idea that Cartoon Network was trying to make room for their other, more stock cartoons. Or at the very least that they didn't want to continue it for whatever reason.

It just seemed reminiscent to me of what happened with Invader Zim on Nickelodeon..the channel was going in a "new direction." It just seemed to be the case, according to Greenblatt's blog at least.

It seems that CN cycles between periods during which it invests in great cartoons and periods during which the cartoons suck. I think we're slowly heading into a dry period- they've canceled Foster's Home, Chowder, and now Flapjack. Har-har Thursdays have pretty much been dismantled. Really, the only new cartoon being pushed heavily right now is Adventure Time.

Come back to CN in a year or two and hopefully things will get better.

This is a list of the few good cartoons they have produced in the last 3 years

* represents cancled
** means pissed off that it was cancled

Transformers: Animated**
Secret Saturdays** (They advertised the hell out of this show and they discarded it like some dirty wash cloth)
Chowder**
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Goosebumps** (Although they did not make it they should have revived Production! Maybe it's better they did not.)
Adventure Time
Scooby Doo! Mystery Incoperated
Generator Rex
Ben 10 Ultimate Alien
Flapjack* (Never really cared for it that much its an okay show.)

Clearly, everyone has a different list of cartoons they like on CN. My list is probably different from yours, considering I'm an adult who has been watching CN since the Powerpuff Girl era (sad, I know). At any rate, it looks like we've ended another era- anyone notice CN is promoting two new shows- Regular Show and Mad? I wonder if they're starting to favor animation styles different from the likes of Johnny Test or Total Drama Action. Eh, maybe it's too early to tell.

**Storm Hawks - they commissioned two seasons of Storm Hawks but only showed one season despite S2 airing Canada and other countries in the world

CN's failure to air the second season (US was the show's biggest single market) meant that no season three was produced

@ neko-neko-1

Oh, God you're right, Storm Hawks as well.

Chowder was crap

Anyway, it was cancelled because Chowder's voice broke

reply

yeah, it sucks. i remember watching har-har tharsdays with new chowder and flapjack and it was amazing. im glad they have adventure time now to make up for their slack and regular show is hit and miss with me, but yeah flapjack and chowder together were AWESOME.

I enjoyed Chowder a lot, but you made your entire point invalid by including the Total Drama series in your "dumb/bad" examples. The series has a lot more depth than most cartoons these days, with a hell of a lot of references and such to things that make it so much better. It's about the only thing I can still watch on Cartoon Network (other than Adventure Time)

reply

So my entire point is made invalid because I disagree about the show? I watched the entire series and did not like it. It was typical teenage drama that has been rehashed repeatedly in romantic comedies and actual reality TV. It brought nothing new to the table in my opinion, much less for a kid's show. You can have your opinion but you sound pretty arrogant without offering much proof that the show is of good quality.
