The lifestyles of the characters illustrate the dangers of a socialist system.

I'm talking about the lackadaisical slacker-lives of all the people in the apartment complex and of Oskar's father. The Swedish socialist safety net in place allows them to fritter their lives away in useless pursuits, becoming complacent, passive, dependent, and almost zombie-like.

I see the same thing happening to people I know in my home country of Canada. The welfare safety net makes it unnecessary for them to actually get out and live their lives. The government allows them to live relatively comfortably without the necessity to use their minds to work and survive.

These people are not necessarily incapable of work, the socialist system just allows anyone with a desire to avoid work to do so relatively easily. It's not hard to shop around to find a doctor to sign you off for disability. I know several able people in Canada who have done so.

In a capitalist society, these people would have to get out there and develop themselves and earn a living as autonomous, truly free, functional individuals. Under socialism, they are allowed to stagnate and become dependent on the system. It's a growing plague of slacker-zombies.

This aspect of the movie horrifies me far more than the vampires, because it's real and now America is headed that way too.
