This movie is full of subtle gems

Like how they orchestrated the distance and height differences when blocking Eli and Oskar. As Eli gets emotionally closer to Oskar, the closer they get physically in frame.

As the world-weary Eli begins to remember what it's like to be a child she goes from standoffish, to curious, to caring and attentive, to truly longing for his companionship. That scene with her kneeling against the wall opposite Oskar's room, knowing he isn't there but tentatively reaching out anyway...absolutely heartbreaking.

When Oskar teases her into entering his home without an invitation. just to see what will happen, and she does it, knowing it will hurt, but doing it anyway because she wanted to know if he really cared...

And at the end, after she rescues him, what was the point of the super close shot of her blood spattered face? I thought, why did they shoot it like that? Then it hit me: She was shielding Oskar from seeing the carnage around him.

I just burst out crying when I realized that.
