Why are people debating the genre?

It's a romantic horror/drama film, that's not so hard to understand. It has scenes which are supposed to be creepy etc. that's what puts it into the horror category.

It doesn't really try to scare you but it does have creepy moments, if it didn't have them it wouldn't be a horror movie.

When this film was released outside of Sweden it was advertised as a "Horror" film, it also appears on many lists of "Good horror" films. Only relatively recently has IMDB included "Romance" as a descriptor, along with "Horror" and "Drama". Unfortunately, it doesn't tie in with many people's idea of what a "Horror" film should be, and therefore they feel that the film fails at being a "Horror" film. The reason it fails at being a "Horror" film is because it isn't really a "Horror" film, as you point out.

Fans of modern "Horror" films expect gore and jump scares, when they don't get this from Let The Right One In they complain, which generates a debate about what this film really is.

I agree with you. Genres are only labels people put on a story to categorize it. Some films happen to fit into more than one. There are films you can't really fit into any sort of box and I feel this is one of them. And really, the genre the film fits in is inconsequential. It's that this is a very good film that matters more than anything.

I'd call it horror for lack of a better term but it's not a film that tries to be scary (suspenseful in a few scenes, maybe) which to me is one of the main qualifiers for the genre.

Well, because it does not feel like a horror film. To me, a horror film is one where the audience is scared, and scared good. This just.. Doesn't have me on my toes like say, Alien has.
To me, this film is as much horror as Demolition Man is horror. It too has thoroughly creepy moments, but it is most def not a horror film.

And I agree what really matters is that this is damn good film, genres be damned.
