It's an obvious move to make the show more likely to succeed by increasing possible audience numbers. I agree that it will detract from the original story, but this is hardly unexpected.
I'm going to give it a chance, not because I think it will be faithful to the original story, but because it
might not completely suck as a stand alone show.
Fun fact: Hammer wanted to up the age of the two main characters in Let Me In, but Reeves insisted that they remain twelve year old children, or he'd walk.

I know they floated the idea by him but I don't think he was that in demand that they'd let him call the shots like that. As it was he wasn't even their first choice.

And yet, that is what happened.
Not everything is a power play, he just told them that he wouldn't be interested in directing Let Me In if they insisted on aging up the two main characters. Maybe the fact that he wasn't their first choice meant they were closer to a deadline and they chose the pragmatic option which meant they would get something rather than nothing. IDK.

They said "maybe you'd like to age them up" and he was like "I don't think that's a good idea." I don't think they had much stake either way.

I said also in the LMI thread that TNT doesnt reach out to young people. They do adult dramas but Stranger Things is a huge hit with adults, so was Stand by Me.
