Black Best Friends in movies like this

They don't stand a chance do they? That's also why I didn't bother to put a spoiler warning on this, because if you watch a movie like this and expect the black friend not to get dead before the credits (with very very few exceptions) you are not very smart.

But hey, at least she got to live past the opening credits (unlike the One Missed Call remake).

When in doubt, run like hell!

Scream 2 and the Prom Night remake immediately comes to mind....

I know one thing baby...you will survive

Oh, not only that, even Gary Oldman's black friend gets it in this too.

I'm also reminded of Freddy vs Jason, though the death of the black friend in that one had me laughing my head off (Freddy's reaction was priceless).

When in doubt, run like hell!

Yeah I was saying the same to my Mum when we watched this movie for the first (and only) time yesterday, particularly about MG not getting very far in One Missed Call!

I remember initially thinking Joy Bryant would be getting bumped off in Skeleton Key, just because she's a BBF - but the way the black potential victims knew better than to get wrapped up in the hoodoo traps, and how Joy as the BBF weren't having a bar of it, I kinda thought to myself this chicks gonna survive - sod what happens to Kate's character! ;D

Yes, there is a rich, long history of black folks biting the dust pretty early in horror films. Even in the notable and rare occasions they make it most of the way,***Spoilers*** like in the Shining and Night of the Living Dead, they still end up dead anyways.

reply

To be fair, spoilers ahead The House on Haunted Hill and Deep Blue Sea. Those films had the black character surviving to the very end. Deep Blue Sea was particularly odd as it was the white hero's potential love interest who got killed moments before the end...and LL Cool J's character actually surviving!

Also in Scream 2... the one Black character who survived knew horror movie conventions very well...and had decided to leave halfway through the film :-)

hey i have 4 words...house on haunted hill...lol...sum beat the oddz...lol

reply

Yeah, but I was talking about good horror movies tho.

reply

Black or white, the best friend dies in these movies. Does it matter that you have to point out the "black" best friend?

Every person that served can be called a veteran, but not every veteran can be called a Marine.

I'm sure Idris elba didn't want his character onscreen too long in this film, better to be killed off in unrecognizable fashion.

You know what? Yeah, I buy that. That makes perfect sense! (same thing for The Reaping too!)

Hey! We Black people know to get the h@!! out of there when some freaky crap is going down. We know we won't be around long. They've been killing off Black people forever in scary movies. You won't find me going to check out any weird noise in the basement--no way!!!!

reply

LOL
Exactly. 5 minutes after her first appearance, i said: "SHES Dead". And dead she got.

reply

black characters are funny when they are killed off early.
