Wouldn't the police go after Casey for the murders? Yes, the young boy "murdered" her friend but her boyfriend died also the next day. With all these people around her dying, the police would get suspicious. I also hate in films how no one is ever shown grieving when someone close to them dies. Even in the beginning when a the baby she babysits dies, she is not upset. I babysit and let me tell you if one of the kids I babysat died, I would be extremely upset. Plus since the baby died and her friend died around that neighbor kid, he is going to be locked up for a very long time. And was her mom a twin? They never really answered that and didn't give a good enough reason for her suicide. And her Grandma dying? Really? She survived the Holocaust and she couldn't beat down a ghost? Come on now.

I agree that the writing was weak, it happens, some story-lines just get dropped because they did what the writers wanted them to. Casey friend said it was bad luck for the baby to see it's reflection before it's one years old. I guess the baby dying was suppose to creep us out. and they didn't give Casey's reaction a second thought

The best and probably only explanation was the the spirit drove her mad, having to watch after Casey all the time, not really getting over the twin dying. the mother did suffer from severe depression. I don't believe the mom was a twin.

Wasn't it implied she had an heart-attack? I agree that it is sort of crazy that she took the time to write a letter to Casey "Just in case something happens to her" but didn't take anytime to make a plan to protect herself. The only thing I can think of is no spirit had bothered her since she killed her brother and seeing him again was too much. But that is just a guess.
