Where did they film it?

Any idea of the real filming location?

If Polanski cant visit the USA, then I presume it was made outside the USA?

Interesting that the USA is there!

I remember recently seeing an actor interviewed (not exactly sure who) that said it was an unnerving experience that as a lot of the film was shot on green screen and the director was shooting 2 films simultaneously, that not only was the director not on set, but not even on the same continent.

Technology has allowed musicians to work together without ever meeting for years, and it now looks like filming movies is catching up.

And the only time I'm going to be easy is when "I'm killed by death"

The main parts of the film were shot in Germany.

reply

Yes--the German island called Sylt, just below the Danish border on the North Sea.

I reckon they sent an assistant director to do some exterior shots in the USA.

Its that man again!!

I'm (a Londoner)intrigued where the london scenes were filmed, because I don't think it was London: the traffic didn't look right. Aside from the London buses and taxis, the cars were all japanese, apart from one 1970s Mini Clubman had somthing about it which didn't look like UK spec.
This combination of cars made me think of Australasia, and particularly New Zealand.
I'm going to have a look at the credits now.

I noticed that too, there was something about that scene - edit according to wikipedia that scene was filmed in Berlin
However, the scene where Ewan's caracter gets mugged for the script did seem like London

The film was shot in various location is northern Germany and southern Denmark to simulate the east coast of the US in New England. Most of the film was shot on the island of Sylt in Germany and some shots were on the island of Romo in Denmark. The ferry that you see in the film is the ferry between the two islands.

Some scenes were also shot in the US - without the director being present, for obvious reasons.

I auditioned for one of the security staff roles in Berlin - unsuccessfully, obviously. I live in Hamburg and travelled to Berlin to say the word "Passport" six times in front of a camera. All auditions are worthwhile though.

Cheers,

I could tell it wasn't filmed in the US as all the BMWs are diesels. Such a schoolboy error on the production's part, along with all the forced fake "Britishness" (dodgy accents, outdated social concepts, obvious lack of real London in the London scenes) knocked a point off my IMDB score.

Those giraffes you sold me, they won't mate. You sold me queer giraffes.

What were the outdated social concepts?

reply

Well, that's what I call them: they might not be so to others. It's the way some characters seemed to treat the whole "being British" thing. Like the American editor-in-chief who says something about "that should be jolly spiffing ey!" or similar. Seriously? I talk like that when I'm taking the piss, and taking the piss only. There were others that I can't remember.

I still really enjoyed the film though. It has a very chilled out vibe and the palace on the beach is lovely.

See, I didn't notice the Diesel cars, because I am not interested in specifics in that area (they are just cars, and having a few big GMCs and Fords in the frame is enough to make me believe it's the USA). I did, however, immediately recognise the ferry as being "local" (to me, not to the USA). And the Hotel "Fishermans Cove" definitely is nice 19th century German Seaside architecture. Also take a look at the windows of the hotel --no sash windows in sight, all two-wing three-pane. Not in the indoors shots though, then it's back to sash windows!
I remember reading a few articles in our local rag in 2009, looking for extras and reporting on the shooting on Sylt. So I knew it was all make-believe when the film premiered.
"Beyond the Sea" tried to sell me Schloss Sanssouci in Potsdam near Berlin for an Italian villa. I had just visited there two weeks before, when I saw the film!

I wondered the same thing as the OP. Polanski doesn't come to the US, so how were shots done in the US?

The filming locations list a few Massachusetts and other US locations. I just presumed it was a second unit director OR some film establishing shots that anybody could do on Polanski's order, as long as his Director of Photography did them with a second U director?

reply

The 'Marthas Vineyard' beach house was faked in Germany

Interiors were constructed in a studio, a dummy facade was built for the exterior shots
