Why was Paul Emmett at the book launch party?

Did it make sense that Paul Emmett would be at the book launch party after all his protestations that he barely knew Adam Lang? Obviously his relationship with Lang was covert. Was he there to support Ruth? I believe i missed something when I left the room briefly-I thought he was her mentor-but it seemed strange that he would support her so publicly-what was the point of his attending the party and standing beside Ruth as she gave her speech?

I appreciate any input.

Paul Emmett's presence at the book launch party did make sense.

That's incorrect. Watch the movie again: Emmett is only one of many guests. He didn't 'support' Ruth Lang and wasn't standing beside her except when he stopped her, while she was trying to talk to the 'Ghost'.
Since he was her tutor at Harvard and is named in Lang's autobiography, I don't think it's THAT suspicious or risky to appear at the book launch,
even if he was her CIA 'handler'...

It's true, that Emmett first denied knowing Adam Lang, but then he confessed to the 'Ghost' that they knew each other through his 'think tank' and their time at university. The 'Ghost' even showed him the draft of the autobiography and Paul Emmett was mentioned in it.
Amelia Blye said, that she could invite a guest (she chose the 'Ghost'), so I guess everybody was allowed bring someone with them.
Why shouldn't Emmett be invited by Ruth or someone else as a guest?
This all seems plausible to me.

The more interesting question is, on which side Amelia Blye was,
because SHE invited the 'Ghost'.
Did she do it, so the CIA could easily kill him?
Was she a CIA agent?
It's possible.

When the Ghost saw Emmett at the book launch party, he was surprised and asked Amelia why Emmett was there and Amelia says something like 'Why shouldn't he be? He was Ruth's mentor at college.' Ding, ding, ding. And that line is what finally made the Ghost see that it was Ruth who was CIA and not Lang at all.
