Couple of questions

I had trouble hearing a lot of the movie, so I must have missed something.

The Aunt and Uncle, where the two boys were placed... was the wife Pearl's sister, or was the husband Pearl's brother?

And in any case, why did the husband say something to Matthew about how he should feel lucky that two kids have Pearl's blood running through them, and not his? Were the two older sons not Matthew's ?

Thanks!

Matthew's wife, Pearl, and Coral are sisters.

The comment that "two kids have Pearl's blood running through them, and not his" is a subtle dig at Matthew. Jonas is implying something is wrong with Matthew. What that is is never explored.

So you didn't really miss anything.

Well, I get that it's a dig against Matthew, as if it's Matthew's 'fault' that John is the way he is. But I don't get the part about the other two kids NOT having their father's blood through them.

Maybe what he means is "consider yourself lucky that two of your kids apparently took after Pearl and only one kid took after you". Something along that line, I guess.

But it's never explained why it would be Matthew's "fault" that John is the way he is.

Thanks!

They didn't like Matthew, and they thought their sister was perfect, so they blamed him for John's retardation.
Also, back then, it was was often blamed on one parent.
