Boyden and Klotz are my favorites of the supporting cast

I love the addition of the two palace gatekeepers as regulars on the
show. Guards Boyden and Klotz are a little Shakespearean device to add
an outside, down to earth, commoner point of view of this grand drama.
They talk of food, love, and the comings and goings of the famous and
powerful. Theirs is the voice of the bystander in a play where nearly
all the other characters are players or wannabes. The moments we spend
with them are respite from intensity. They are warm, and human and
curious and funny. In Gilboa, I'd be spinning them off for their own
sitcom.

As a literary device I agree they were a brilliant idea. In practice however they annoyed the crap out of me. Well I could actually stomach them up to the Thomasena crush thing. They only really work in there role if they have no real contact with the major players.

My annoyance with them was that they seemed like mall security guards however the "security guards" at the White House are in fact uniformed Secret Service agents. So the guy standing at the White House gate asking for ID is a college graduate and has undergone rigorous training.
