Speculation on how the aliens came to be there

What do we think: was there some kind of malfunction? A plague? Maybe this was explained in the movie (I haven't seen it in five years), but I thought it was left kind of murky. Originally it appeared that none of the aliens were terribly bright, but then we learned there was at least one scientist among them. What do you suppose their mission was, some kind of deal transporting a bunch of worker drones?

Probably some mechanical failure on the ship gets them lost or stranded far away from their destination. Supplies run out. A computer or navigator sets a course for the nearest habitable planet with at least some signs of technological development, which turns out to be Earth.

I've speculated that they have never run into other sentient beings either. It's a confusing first contact scenario for both groups.

I think they were just miners or something on their way to do some work. Nothing seemed all that special about them. Their weapons seemed light by what must be the standards of an interstellar civilization.

Good thoughts. So the one guy who was secretly working on stuff was Scotty, staying incognito?

:) Yea, I guess so. He was apparently smarter or at least more independent than the rest who seemed disorganized without leadership.

I'd be interested as to whether there were other higher class members of their society trying not to draw attention to themselves and acting like everyone else. Or with plans of their own that didn't work out.

Wouldn't he have known about them?

Yea, I guess so, unless they were sneaking around on purpose. Maybe their plans involved something he wouldn't approve of like controlling the workers for their own benefit.

My guess was always that those guys likely ditched 'em there. Maybe they saw that there weren't enough resources to sustain them all, or they took off in something much smaller, which could only accommodate some of them, so naturally all the "star bellied" prawn had a ticket.

Good message and good replies! So refreshing.
I have nothing to add though.

it was malfunction.

At first I thought they were the worst of the worst of their race and that they were dumped on earth cause they didn't want to waste resources on them.

But then there was Christopher and he wasn't too stupid, yet he was convinced that if he were to go back to his world, they would come back and save the rest. If they were indeed dumped there, he wouldn't count on help

Maybe the reason Chris left all the other Prawns behind was because the ship couldn't sustain all of them anymore. It had been damaged or lost its supplies and so couldn't transport a million plus back to their home world.

So my guess is that there had been some disaster on board which forced them to look for an inhabited planet with an intelligent indigenous species that could help them. Unfortunately, they found Earth instead.
