I work with a girl from South Africa

When I first met her I asked her a bunch of run of the mill 'Africa' questions. Being a movie guy and having District 9 as possibly my favorite movie of all time I wanted to ask her about it. So one of the questions was if she had seen District 9 and if so how did she feel about it? She told me she had seen it and enjoyed it.

I asked how she felt about the refugees in Joburg and how they were portrayed in D9. Clearly to me they are mistreated and easy to sympathize with. She understood and asked me to picture the same situation in my own city (I live in Chicago). She said to imagine if a large number of immigrants suddenly settled down in Millennium Park (huge beautiful park in Chicago). And with these refugees came crime, fear, filth, etc. Honestly I hadn't considered this prospect. Strangely enough Chicago is facing a very similar situation right now with Syrian immigrants possibly moving in soon.

Just thought it was interesting to hear a first hand perspective from someone who had lived in Joburg.

I agree, it's good for everyone to consider these sorts of things.

I'm sure it's not your intention, but this reads as though you believe all Syrian immigrants are expected to bring crime, fear, filth etc. I'd take a look at your politicians and news media if that's what you've been led to believe.

Look no further than Europe if you don't think the Syrian refugees would bring crime.

The main question here would be:"Have you tapped it already?"

Very different situation, the aliens were good and intelligent beings, can't say the same for the wave of crimmigrants ruining our continent.

She's not fully understood the meaning of the film, essentially it's using the Prawns to tell the story of the real District 6 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_Six

It's not so much about the sudden arrival - as the Prawns had since been there for 20 years but how they were about to be forcible removed against their will and wishes.
