Awful underscoring?

The composer isn't credited on imdb, and I'm not about to rerun a DVD I've just put away in order to check the credits, but am I the only one who found the 'elevator musak' underscoring 'Bangkok Love Story' pestilentially AWFUL??? That and the embarassingly treacly song that popped up a couple of times, complete with clumsy, incoherent subtitles? As my partner observed (he too found the score egregiously distracting), the problem with the music was that the constantly-repeated melody of the main theme had the effect of tying all the plot elements together - when those elements didn't NEED to be tied together, and actually suffered from this clumsy aural linkage. It wasn't a score I can imagine anyone wanting to have on their iPod; let's turn with relief to the score for, say, 'Performance', which treats a similar theme (violent criminal -in the case of 'BLS' a hitman- becomes obsessively connected to a victim - in the case of 'Performance', Turner the unwitting rock musician/magician who conjures up some dangerous magick). Forty years on, 'Performance''s score remains extraordinarily potent, still evoking images from the movie because it was so organically a part of the film. I don't want to hear the 'Bangkok Love Story' score again, ever. The point I think I'm trying to make is that 'BLS' is shot in the grainy, hyperactive, wide-angled manner of a music video. So why score it with sappy soap opera pseudo-pop? There are plenty of smart young rock musicians in Thailand who'd've been more than happy to contribute the jagged urban rock soundtrack the movie so obviously needed.

I agree, the music was pretty bad. With a good score this movie is art. It is amazing for a bad score can pull down the quality of a whole movie. It reminded me of the dilemma of 'Equilibrium'. Great movie, horrible score.

okay, it's a 4 minute song, so what? If you ever saw a manga you know these animes are filled with the same sweet, sugary music.. "Bangkok Love story" comes from the same cloth, and really should be looked at as a live action manga; in that way the movie becomes great!

I for one liked the theme song. But like others I hated the ending since I was really rooting for them to have a happily ever after. Lord knows gay characters in movies rarely get that. Funny thing as they left the prison together I was like YES! and less than a second later Meht gets shot. I felt so hurt. lol As Itt scrambled to Meht's lifeless body I wished he'd gotten shot too, that way he wouldn't have to endure the pain of living without Meht. Imagine giving up everything to be with someone then they're violently taken from you.

Their love was destined to fail, which makes the story more romantic, i guess. it is a very good film though, and perhaps a happy ending would not have been as believable.

Yeah I know what you mean but boy, they sure had me rooting for them. I would have been happy if they'd at least had gotten a chance to enjoy each other, say for like a year or so, before the gangsters finally caught up with Maek and gunned him down. At least THAT would have still held up the believability factor and made a few viewers, like me happy. lol

That is true, it would have been nice. But any happiness and fluff would have clashed with the tone of the rest of this film, which is gritty, and bleak, even apocolyptic in it's view of an unforgiving World. But I'm sure if Hollywodd ever gets their hands on it, there will be that happy ending...and there will be white guys playing Asians, lol!

You seriously cracked me up with that line!! LOL
Is Hollywood STILL doing that?!! ;o) I thought all that went up with Sputnik! lol

But seriously, I wouldn't mind a nice story involving gay characters where FOR ONCE half of the couple doesn't bite the dust! lol

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion; but I can not let this be the only comment on the subject. Did these people see the same movie I did? I loved the music for this film. I find it exactly what is required: filled with longing and repressed desire. The scene I call "Stolen Glances", is oscar worthy for it's beauty and how wonderfully directed it was. Another scene I call "Roof Tops" is also beautiful. The "Love Theme" (Will You Ever Hold Me, Dear?) is wonderful and also oscar worthy. As evidence to my opinion, just go to You Tube for the Guitar Version, it has been viewed 32,820 times. The trailer with music has been viewed 433,822 times! My regret is that this sountrack was apparently never produced.
