Yes. I admit I wasn’t concentrating on the film as much I should have been (I found the main characters unlikeable, which made it less involving, so I didn’t pay as much attention as I should have), but I got lost in the non-chronological presentation and the misdirection.
I realised what it was all about only at the denouement, when Tom Wilkinson revealed all. Up until then I had little idea of who was double-crossing whom, and found it dragged as a result. I can easily see why some people didn’t stick with it all the way through.
Of course it would be different if I were to watch it again, as I could pick up on the details better, but it was too much for me to digest in a single, first viewing.
As an aside, I would say that some films work well despite their complexity, but they have to be satisfying to the viewer. This film didn’t draw me in enough; even though I smiled at the twist at the end, I didn’t get the sense of reward associated with films where you’re rooting for the main character(s), and feel more emotionally involved. Hence the low rating I gave it.
