When are we supposed to 'Assume' in movies?

..I mean at the end Owens character is found out to be a *SPOILERS* double crosser but 5 mins later he has the formula still? Are we to assume he had another, undisclosed way of smuggling it out? Or is it a writing/editing mistake? We never see them urinate but I ASSUME they do....
