Why the importance of the speech?

So much hubbub over that crumpled up speech paper Julia Roberts found in the trash. And ultimately that's what set everything in motion. But they knew he would have just said it all verbally the following day and she'd be present since she worked there so why was that document so important? I just found that weird.

It's important to Garsik because he's not likely to be invited to the meeting, and he wants to know what his chief competitor is up to.

It was all part of the trap to rush Garsik in to making a rash and self-destructive statement 10 days before the annual board meeting. The last two shots of a happy Tully and slumped Garsik show the plan worked and Garsik knew he would soon be out of a job.
