Just realised

That I am basically watching people get roofied and raped.

What the *beep* was Joss Whedon thinking?!

What the *beep* am I thinking? I am a feminist watching this crap!

reply

Really? I think that point was made pretty freaking obvious in the pilot.

reply

To be fair to Joss... 2 things. First, the early episodes were heavily interfered with by Fox. And 2nd, if you haven't watched more than the first couple of episodes you wouldn't get it. But given what the Dollhouse technology is leading to... Whedon is staying on message. What they are doing is WRONG.

Well, it is an evil organization. Of course what they're doing is wrong.

Can't stop the signal.

reply

You're watching a show about a difficult subject that seems to be moving you and prompting you to reflect about it. Looks like you could be doing much worse.

reply

I am a feminist

There's your problem.

reply

Um, no. That's not a problem. Thinking it's a problem is the real problem.

Can't stop the signal.

reply

No its the problem. Modern feminism isn't about equal rights its about something else entirely.

Egalitarian is what you SHOULD be

As for the show and fox it was fox who told Joss to make it less about sex and more about other things the dolls could do. The very existence of implanting and sending them out imlies sex may be involved but is it rape? I suppose that depends on the contract they signed.

reply

Modern feminism isn't about equal rights its about something else entirely.
And what "something else entirely" would that be?

Aliens? Us? Is this one of your Earth jokes?

No, it's not. Thinking it is is the problem.

Yes. That's a big theme of season 1.

Let's be bad guys.

reply

Guys do get raped as well, don't worry.

That's one of the many reasons why this show tanked. I saw it as it was airing and so many viewers were upset with the premise. I don't blame you and Joss was a bit ambitious to think that this show would not be cancelled. That being said, I'm not sure how much interference FOX had.

reply

I feel the same way. I watched this show years ago and I really liked it, but now the show is making me cringe.

reply

But... it's supposed to make you cringe!

reply

What, are we as people, and as feminists, supposed to only see things that support our world view? Do you want to shelter yourself from every idea that challenges your beliefs? I mean, I'd get your outburst if the show depicted violent rape repeatedly, or if all the female characters were relegated to slaves. But that's not what the show does.

I consider myself a feminist (meaning, simply, that women and men are equal. That's it. No other agenda.) And I loved this show from the first time I watched it. I even like the first several episodes with Doll of the Week. The idea that an ultimately evil corporation is turning people into rentable dolls is fascinating. It makes me, the viewer, hope that they will escape and destroy the company. It's a good sci-fi premise. and that's just the beginning.

One of the dolls becomes self aware. An FBI agent is hunting for the Dollhouse, then (spoilers) becomes involved. The head of the house turns from blindly following orders to taking things into her own hands, with the help of the dolls themselves. The character arc for the programmer (Topher) is one of the best I've ever seen.

Great show.
