A cinematic time capsule

Got my fairy godmother to send me a copy of Real Summer and have watched it 3 times so far. Amazing piece.
Poliakoff is a master of creating moments in time, a cinematic snapshot. For an American (at least half of me), it's particularly fascinating to see portrayed in such detail a time that was so unlike what we were experiencing here. Our history is so short comparatively so we don't begin to comprehend the impact of the class changes in your country. So the writing becomes quite important as it explains the changes that Mary sees.

Of course, there's the constant Poliakoff theme of things not being what they seem which gives the piece a little edginess even if it is comfortably set in the fashion and decor of the oh-so secure 50's. I found both characters sympathetic and quite real in their youthful delusions about life.

The production made me long to see Capturing Mary to see what would happen.
