So they're going ahead with it...

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH! If you want to make a new thriller or dramaseries, don't use 'Messiah' just because the first four series were a succes and now they try to profit from this by calling it 'Messiah V'. I can't believe it!! There isn't even ANY original actor from Series 1 in it!!! BBC, shame on you! Damned moneywolves, that's what they are!

I hope they boycot this whole project. It shall probably ruin the good reputation Messiah had by crime/thriller fans as I now know already that it will suck.

I understand your point of view, I lived over there for a long while and got to know some of the shows, and how the BBC often treats them. But on the other hand over here in the States most shows last at least 6 series (at least)...and some of them loose and gain characters constantly...look at lost for example, they kill them off constantly (and usually the ones you like). Just giving a different opinion.

reply

Just seen a trailer for it this evening. Looks ok. No date yet just 'Coming Soon' but that generally means within the next month or so.

reply

I'm sure it'll be a decent programme, but I'm really confused as to why it's called Messiah. After all, as the OP points out, there are none of the original actors left in it anymore. Also, the original story was called Messiah because of the Boris Starling book, but the use of that title had become more and more tenuous as the series progressed. So having a show, with seemingly no link to the original, called Messiah, seems very strange.

It will be on the 20th and 21st January, BBC1, 9-10pm both nights

The theft of the title is not a reason to not watch it. I saw a preview last night and it's a good drama in it's own merits.

reply

It is called Messiah becuase the killer in all the series think that they are the 'Messiah'

reply

That was the original concept but not completely the case in the new one, I felt.

reply

It has no connection whatsoever to the original Messiah episodes - except the title. It's typical though for a channel such as the BBC to fly off the brand name of a successful show. How many people will tune in expecting Red Metcalfe to be on deck? Quite a few I imagine and they will be extremely disappointed.
The BBC must have very little confidence in anyone being able to carry it off as did Ken Stott and his team otherwise they would have given it a new title and just promoted it as a new crime series - which it is.
It doesn't help that I have little or no opinion of Marc Warren as an actor! He is highly overrated IMO.

reply

To be honest, i think that they may have made a mistake billing it as a Messiah programme.

There will be a lot of people who (i)Think that there is no point watching it because they missed the earlier ones, when if billed as something completely new may make the effort to watch it. (ii) May think that they have lost track of what was going on with the series, due to the entirely new cast, and therefore not b.other watching the new programme.

If the events of the previous series are referred to or have a bearing on the events in this programme they may have a valid reason for linking it with the others, but so far i can see no instance of that!

Personally I thought that was bloody brilliant! Didn't have Red Metcalf in it, but it was certainly in the spirit of the previous Messiahs.

i thought it was really good yes ok maby it doesnt have any of the old actors in it but its not like they were trying to put on a whole new series they just wanted to make a 2 parter and decided that it was better making just a small mini series of a previous series then start a new one where lodes of people will ask if they will turn it into a full on show
also the bbc sont make money from having good shows they get all there money from the tv licence thats why they dont have 2 have adverts the fact that the shows are good is just for ratings but tey dont have 2 make good shows if they dont want to because its the law to pay ur tv licence which i have previously stated goes to the bbc

finallyhe religous aspect of the show ties in quite nicely to the originals any way
thats the end of my very long rant

p.s if ur gunna reply with things like ohh ur grammers bad or ur spellings bad dont because i already no this its just im not that botherd cauz it aint like this is an exam or something.

reply

The funny thing is, with it's religious connections the 'Messiah' name probably fits this 'sequel' better than some of the others!

I agree, though. The new cast and lead actor would have been a great opportunity to sell this as a series with a new name.

I prefer Imaginality to reality.

reply

Seen it just now, and I was damn right in my first post! Come on people! It was a cheap copy of the first Messiah, they didn't even change the end (in which the murderer - of all the people in Britain - HAS to kill the DCI to complete his mission!) Joseph Walker also had so-called flash backs about a drama in the past and so on. It would have been good if Messiah Part One wasn't here first.

reply

I'd never heard of Messiah until about 2 minutes before the first episode of Messiah 5. I'm now thinking I'll have to get the DVD's of the first 4 as I thought it was really good.

As for the ending having to kill off the DCI, when was the original book written in relation to the 1995 Brad Pitt fil "Se7en"?

reply

Extraordinarily poor writing and lazy to boot. They might as well have shown a repeat of Episode 1.
I can't believe how boring that was. There wasn't even any tension in the lead up to discovery of bodies. In the original Messiah's you were on the edge of the seat half the time, in this one I was ready to channel hop!

I enjoyed it a lot more than i thought i would. I would still have loved to have seen Ken Stott in the role though.

Anyone know if there will be any more?

reply

"copy of the first Messiah"

As much as I enjoyed it I must agree with this point.
