I think the way George Romero has gone is kind of like the way Lucio Fulci went after making his greatest horror movies - he just started to churn out crap. He lost the creative spark (apart from, maybe, Cat in the Brain), and I think the same thing has happened to Romero.

The characters weren't even interesting enough to care about. I think the only character in his last three films I didn't want to die was the one bad military girl in the car in LOTD who had a zombie easy her cheek off.
