Just watched it.. its not good people.

Just watched this movie. Wasn't a fan of diary of the dead so I appreciated this film actually had establishing shots and something other than steady cam nonsense.

I kept waiting to get to know some characters or learn the plot. But none of that happened. The whole rivalry thing was paper thin and I never understood why the girl cared about sparing the dead people, along with the flannigans or whatever they were called.

If they could get the dead to eat horses etc.. so what? They don't need food to survive its a craving for the living, which would still extend to humans regardless.

In the end, the story didn't have anything to it, the production levels were .. ok I suppse but some of the cgi zombie killings were like if film students did them.

I didn't get to know anyone (and I tried, honestly I did), again the plot didn't seem to go anywhere, the motivations of characters was all over the place.. I dunno how Romero made this movie so bland.

I won't call it the worst zombie movie ever (i've seen much worse) but its so bland and disconnected, I definitely feel like I wasted my time watching. This is not a return to greatness for Romero, if you're a fan of his and just want to see some more mindless zombie flicks, check it out I guess. If you care deeply for his previous work and value your time, skip it.

I hated Diary too. What I don't get is the not eating animals thing, was it George's idea for that? I first remember it from DotD remake where they wouldn't touch the dog. My only problem with that is that the basic need to feed, and the memories of human life we get from LotD etc. is that they would be more prone to eating animals than humans.

The movie was just stupid...so far the only animal they eat are freaking horses???? And then how did the two old guys turn into zombies? They shot each other, they weren't infected by zombies so at the end they turned into zombies? WTF??????

Okay, I have to jump on this post. (Although I should say I haven't watched Diary or Survival of the Dead yet.)

alake: Have you seen any zombie movies made before Resident Evil? It's not always a virus. In Romero's movies (radio and TV broadcasts in Night of the Living Dead for example) it's pretty explicitly stated that anyone who dies comes back. The only explanation we ever get is a quick blurb about radiation from a space probe and that's not really used in later movies. So you get shot and die, you come back (unless you're shot in the head).

Cemetery Man and Fido use similar setups and are pretty good.

Um is this the first romero film you've seen? Anyone who dies comes back.

here is why you are wrong.

1. your opinions are based on all his previous movies. you half admit that if not out right.

2. who cares if you want to get to know characters. A writer will let you know what the writer wants you to know. in this case most of the things your worried about knowing dont matter.

3. Characters were awesome and original. im sorry you didnt get there entire back stories.

4. what makes you say everyone's motivations are all over the place. i think all they want to do is survive and the other is rivalry.

5. your right about the horses in the sense of who cares if they eat horses but the thing is thats what the film was saying too.

What a sad post, you watch a movie to know characters, to care about or hate them, if you don't want to do either, then why watch a movie?

reply

No, we want to see zombies being torn up/some humans being munched/critique or satire of modern culture/addition to the zombie mythology. NOT to get to know characters, sure it is a bonus but we don't always have to have opinions abut characters, so what if they are ambiguous. So are people in real life.

i agree, it isn't the worst zombie movie ever, but it is romero's worst in my opinion. I even liked land and diary of the dead, which a lot of hardcore fans hated. But yeah, if he is going to continue making zombie movies, he better start going down another road than what he did with survival, or he's going to turn into a
c-movie syfy channel director.

and i'm not bashing at all. i LOVE the first 3 and think they are all 3 in my top 5 zombie movies of all time. and like i said,i even though land and diary were great, but this one just got a little too stupid and got that low budget feel to it really fast. at least with diary he had great practical effects and the handheld camera route he went kind of changed things up a bit.

I'd like to see him have at least one more try at another "dead" movie, just to see see if this was due to budget cuts and bad acting, or if romero is starting to slip up.....

It just seemed so bizarre to focus on something as insignificant as a family feud in the mist of a zombie apocalypse. The majority of the time it felt like the zombies were a mere side attraction, every character was completely desensitized to the fact the living dead had risen and were eating their flesh, I mean zero tension, no sense of dread, no panic and certainly no survival instinct displayed by anyone, surely the undead warrant at least some fear.

Like you I tried to immerse myself in the plot but every time I attempted to I was distracted by some irrelevant corny line or bit of slapstick, I mean the part about that woman being a lesbian? Or the joke about the pussy river? Or well pretty much everything. After a while I just figured George had decided to make a go at a comedy/parody of sorts, such a strange mix of scenes though, the characters go the whole time acting like immature clowns and then the next minute try to pull the films mood to serious, it just comes across as confused. The film suffers from a real identity crisis. What I don't understand is that if you're going to spend all that money and put all that effort into making the film why not take it seriously. It could have been so much more, they had the budget and some pretty good effects artists, the idea of an island is good also, as seen in 'zombi 2', so why waste it all. Either establish yourself as a light hearted comedy or a serious horror, don't interchange the two and try to be everything or else you end up with this disjointed rubbish.

The payoff at the end was pointless, the acting was wooden and the the overall feeling of the film was lifeless and cheesy. I really look to salvage the best out of every film I see because I know how spoiled and obsessed with perfection a lot of people are when it comes to films, but it really was an uninspired empty experience to watch. The passion has gone.

Terrible film!

So many awful moments to pick from, but for me the top three were...
1) Zombie rides a horse
2) Man eats meal prepared by his kicthen bound Zombie wife
3) The fact i watched the entire thing

I only watched it all because it's George. What was he thinking! It felt like a bad episode of 'Death Valley', where the comedy doesnt work.

Bring on Walking Dead Season 3!!!
