Gundam could go back to its roots...

http://www.gundamnews.net/?p=253

Well, here’s some interesting Christmas news to pass along to fans. As most of you know, I told you that plans of the 30th anniversary Gundam series were slated to be released following the end of the second season of Gundam 00 in March. Now possible developments of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn.

“New Adult Gundam — Abridged Edition”

Many fans were expecting an interview with Director Yoshiyuki Tomino, however Amazon Japan’s description had suddenly changed one day, and the “interview” listing with him disappeared. This came as a result of the sale date being postponed. The main highlight of this issue was in regards to the 30th Anniversary project. The following are the main points of the article:

- Since 2009 is the 30th anniversary, various ‘festivals’ are planned following the conclusion of 00’s second season.

- Further development is expected for Unicorn aside from that of Gunpla.

- There also seems to be a favoritism to the Gundam Unicorn and Hard Graph Gunpla (Ueno Kazunori Chief Gundam Officer)

Rumors have been flying around for the longest time about the possible animation of Gundam Unicorn, and based on Ueno’s favoritism towards the first generation, it is entirely possible for this to happen. The poster comments with “On the other hand, I have no complaint if there is a new work by Tomino” at the end of the posting.

If they're going to animate Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn then I would be one extremely happy man. I think its time for Gundam to go back to its roots. Back when there are no androgynous bishounens that make yaoi fangirls squeal while writing fanfictions about 'em. Back when there are no overpowered Gundams that could take an army without breaking a sweat. Back when Gundam is about a compelling war drama with human characters. Back when it all mattered. I'm not saying the newer shows are bad. 00 is shaping to be a solid series. It may have started out slow but the show is finally delivering some good stuff. But it will be a treat to Gundam fans, especially the ones who started out with UC, if they did animate Unicorn.

For those who aren't familiar with Gundam Unicorn, it's a serial novel written by Harutoshi Fukui. A lot of people said that the books were well written. It's a mature and gripping story that some good political stuff in it. The mobile suits were also portrayed realistically, they were seen more as fighter jets and tanks. The novel begins in UC 0001, the year mankind started to move to space. The main story is set in UC 0096, three years after Char's Counter Attack. The remnants of Char's Neo Zeon are engaging Federation forces in guerrilla tactics, and so the Federation then creates the ECOAS, a task force group to hunt down the remaining Zeons. A blonde masked man named Full Frontal gathered all of the Neo Zeon forces and renamed the group "The Sleeved." He is considered to be the second coming of Char. Caught up in all of this mess is 16 yr old Barnarge Lynx, a young student who sees war as something akin to fiction. Zeon sympathizers have started growing in numbers both in Earth and space, thinking the Federation would create another Titans-like group. Barnarge and company must stop Full Frontal from acquiring something called the "Laplace box", an item that could reveal the "secret" of the foundation of the Universal Century.

Let's just hope an animated Unicorn would become a reality. That would be awesome indeed. But right now let's all enjoy 00.

I think the NT-D system of the Unicorn Gundam could give Barnarge the edge he needs in battle. With the Destroy mode on, Unicorn is a force to be reckoned with. I got the Master Grade figure and the suit looks badass when NT-D is activated. But it's still not overpowered like it's the second coming of the beam spamming Strike Freedom. Just an improved variant of the Psychoframe system used in Nu Gundam.

They're all the same movie. That's why Hollywood movies are like visits from old friends.
