Brokers in North Korea?

When watching this movie, I was surprised to see there was a woman playing a role of a kind of broker. She bribed some guards to get Joon out of the re-education camp (prison) and to get him across the border into China. I know a little about North Korea after reading some books and watching some documentaries, but I've never heard of these kind of brokers.

Do these kind of brokers also exist in real life in North Korea? And if so, where can I find more information about them?

Yeah that was a little random and the movie never fully explained how the broker operated. I highly doubt you can do that at a camp right next to the Chinese border. As far as I know most brokers operate within China and operate underground, not in broad daylight like in the movie

Actually they do exist. One of the reasons why you might not have heard about this is because they probably want to keep this a little secret. Anyways, I've seen documentaries where people were talking to their family in North Korea and the broker had to go find the guy and give him a cell phone to achieve this. I didn't even know they get cell reception in there but apparently they do. If you need examples, there are numerous families where one family member defects first and then hire people to send for his/her family.
