Assisted abortion is okay but assisted suicide is not?

So a woman can go to an abortion clinic to be assisted in aborting a fetus. They say a persons body is their business. But that same person 60 years later and dying of kidney failure can't have someone help them to end their own life? What happened to what a person does with their body is their business? I know that a fetus isn't supposed to be considered a human being and I am not trying to start a debate about abortion. But I just don't think abortion and assisted suicide is all that different. Why should it be any less morally wrong or unlawful? It is okay to end the life of a fetus that will potentially live a long and full life but not okay to end the life of an elderly person that will die naturally in a few weeks in agonizing pain? The reason abortion is legal is because we don't woman doing a hack job on themselves or going to some drunken doctor fired for malpractice performing the procedure. People that commit suicide sometimes do a hack job on themselves by leaping off a bridge and surviving but becoming paralyzed. Or shooting themselves in the head only to become brain dead on life support. If abortion is legal then why isn't this legal? Makes me think of why alcohol is legal but not marijuana. I want to hear some opinions and facts as to why this is illegal.

huh, very good points!!

you cant compare the two really.

abortion isnt killing a fully developed child, most abortion is carried out way in advance of the foetus developing fully grown organs let alone thoughts, pain or conciousness. later abortions that may cause a foetus pain are only done in extreme circumstances where the life of mother or child are in danger.

killing some cells that christians think is a human because their bible and pope says so (whilst ignoring the science) is not the same as assisting in the death of a fully concious and aware adult.

as for morals, abortion does not give any say to the foetus but euthanasia gives all the say to the patient. and i dont want to hear any morals that come from a holy book, they do not count, they are not just because you have faith they are right, we make our own morals.

as for the legality, you would think its to do with the pharmaceutical companies, the religious nut-jobs running our countries (we have bishops in the house of lords in the UK, of which i am ashamed), the fear of opening up the floodgates but more importantly people getting help to die that could have been helped.

on that last point though, if someone has a clean, free, respectful and assited way to die would it stop the other type of suicides? i think it would stop alot. and if it did would some of those people then not get pointed in the right direction, receive the care they needed and get the attention that may crave or need? if thats the case then it is an extra benefit to legalising euthanasia.

Well, its because governments can make money off dying people but not from unborn foetuses.

It is the same reason why a murderer could probably get away with it if you have a good lawyer, where tax evasion isn't.

Well, let's just stipulate that the courts have ruled that fetuses (fetii?) are not people. Therefore, it's an exercize in futility to compare abortions to assisted suicide of people who have been born.

Here's an exercise to show why you believe that life starts when you come out of your mother's womb and not at conception.

What's your birthday? How old are you?

If you answered anything other than the day that your mom and dad had sex and conceived you, and if you answered anything other than what's on your driver's license plus nine months, you don't believe that abortion is murder either.

That's the dumbest comparison I've ever read. We celebrate our BIRTHday, not our CONCEPTION day. I have no problem with any argument in this discussion except that one ludicrous comment. Come on, Man!
