Little Mikael Blomkvist

What was Mikael doing on that island as a child when he met Harriet?

What is his relation to the family ?

I had to read the chapter (which is #4 btw) again, and jeez that's a long time ago. I've just copied the conversation between Henrik Vanger and Blomkvist and their first meeting in Hedestad, and ran it through Google Translate. It goes like this;

- Do you remember her, Mikael?
- Remember? Mikael raised his eyebrows.
- Yes, you have met her. You've actually found yourself in this room before.

Mikael looked around and shook his head.
- No, how would you be able to remember. I knew your father. I hired Kurt Blomkvist as an installer and machine technician several times during the 50's and 60's. He was a talented man. I tried to persuade him to study further and become an engineer. You were here the whole summer of 1963, when we changed machines in the paper mill here in Hedestad. It was difficult to find housing for your family, and we solved it by that you got to stay in the little house on the other side of the road. You can see the house from the window.

Henrik Vanger walked up to the desk and picked up the portrait.
- This is Harriet Vanger, the granddaughter of my brother Richard Vanger. She took care of you several times that summer. You were two years old going on three. Or maybe you were three years old already, I don't remember. She was thirteen years old.
- You must forgive me, but I haven't the slightest recollection of what you just told me.

Mikael was not even convinced that Henrik Vanger spoke the truth.
- I understand that. But I actually remember you. You ran around everywhere here on the farm with Harriet in tow. I could hear your screams as soon as you stumble somewhere. I remember that I gave you a toy on some occasion, a yellow tractor in sheet metal, that I myself had played with as a child, which you became madly fond of. I think it was the colour.

Mikael suddenly became cold inside. He actually remembered the yellow tractor. When he got older, it had stood as an ornaments on a shelf in his boyhood room.
- Do you remember? Do you remember the toy?
- I remember it. It might amuse you to know that the tractor is still there, at the Toy Museum on Mariatorget in Stockholm. I donated it when they were looking for old original toys ten years ago.
- Really? Henrik Vanger chuckled delightedly. Let me show you... "
