Confusing movie

Maryann and her hubby were like Bonnie and Clyde. So when I see this movie I am like real confused what case was this about. I know she did 27 years for the California case. And then she went to Hawaii to serve time for the murder and kidnapping and theft job there. Now in the movie the writers husband states that she was going to California to see about her case and then see her mother, and the hubby states California is not on the way to Hawaii. So somebody help me here.
