I just finished watching this, and have to say I liked the ending. The standard "good-guy overcomes impossible odds to save the day" ending is boring and expected, twists are more fun.

Not saying I don't like to see good triumph in the end, but if it doesn't feel natural then it takes away from itself. This ending felt natural for the story.

I fully agree with Raulfin. This was not the typical happy Hollywood ending. It would have been better if the snotty daughter got killed too, but we'll take it !

I really enjoyed the ending. They changed it from the original script though. In the original script, Kelsey and Gary were brother and sister. The slight change for the movie with them being lovers was def better IMHO.

After she shot him & he asked what was going on, I was expecting a brother/sister thing. The ending they gave made it feel all the more creepy.

It creeped me out too. It seemed to me that the only reason that Jennifer Carpenter did this was as a vehicle to be the bad cop in a movie, when she's always been the good cop on Dexter (TV), and that's all I come away from in the movie. I can understand WHY Carpenter did the movie, but it was only a play after Dexter and I'm sure she wanted to have herself on this...would she have done this movie if she was not on Dexter. I don't think so.
It made the whole thing a lousy movie. Too bad...they really could have done it up well.

This was not a good movie. It just fell flat. The end was ridiculous: where was the money coming from to afford it; 3 of them for her by herself - one is difficult enough; how was the job psych test passed.

Agree, enjoyable rubbish with top rate actors wasting their talent on junk which inexplicably was made over the countless better scripts, books, ideas etc. just a waste but still mildly enjoyable due to the actors...not the absurd script or the hack direction.

What was there to afford? You don't need money to steal drugs. You don't need money to own a crappy house in Buffalo. Passing a psych test is not that hard. You are assuming that because she's a murderer, she is therefore stupid and cannot pass a test. Sometimes killers can be smart

Inspired by actual events means just that. The part that was real was likely just that a man kept a prison in his basement, the rest is fiction.

The movie sucked. The ending sucked but the TWIST was incredible. I never saw it coming. It movie felt to me like the twist was all they cared about it. It was the only thing that worked beautifully. Right there the whole time and didn't see it coming. The movie could have been ALOT better and it's a shame to waist this great twist on this. The actual ending after the shoot out was just awful.

anyone else think the killer looked EXACTLY like John Ritter (in Skin Deep to be exact)? I couldn't get it out of my mind the entire time. It really bugged me.

You Suck...now deal with it.

how could you not see that coming?
it's hinted from the very start of the investigation when she seems more eager to get cusack's character to back off instead of helping him.
and as the movie goes on it becomes even more obvious.

anyways, maybe an ok story but horrible acting, except cusack.

probably because the movie was so lame...lol but there's always someone who claims they "saw it coming"...and honestly I didn't see how it was obvious. She wanted to solve the case her way, which was HER JOB...how that seems "obvious" is beyond me..? lol

but maybe it has to do with your interest - I thought the movie sucked so I wasn't really "looking" for it... but compared to a movie like surveillance - which PRACTICALLY gives the ending away in the FIRST scene...

dude, try paying more attention.
anyway. solving the case her way implies that she first tries telling her PARTNER, that his daughter is ok, just a little case of running away, then when he gets close to getting some answers she sends him off, so he can get some sleep, the she shows up out of thin air at the black nurses house, cause she want;s to "cover his ass", the phone calls also give it away, she even hints once that someone in the force could be helping the kidnapper.

even with or without all that, i wouldn't change the fact that the movie is bad :)

It's because most people expect a twist from every movie now so they look for it. When I watched that Pacino movie 88 Minutes I thought, "The lawyer does whatever this movie is about" simply because she acted a little too friendly with the killer who was on trial.

People like to feel like they've outsmarted the writers. It's similar to how people complain about minutiae in anything. If they can find something wrong with something else, to them, it means that they understand how something works better than the person who made it.

In any case, I can see how it would be "obvious" to the people looking for a twist. Deb didn't have a lot of meaningful screen time. She obviously couldn't help Cusack find the guy so she had to be written in an awkward way. That awkwardness set her up as suspicious.

haha yeah Im glad I'm not the only one who saw it coming from a mile away! From the scene of her books about fertility issues, her desperation to get him away from the fat nurse guy, her constant phonecalls where they didnt show who she was speaking to so was quite obvious she was giving warning to the bad guy! Her story about a "girl" disappearing from her home town and there being nobody to look for her! jeezus they couldnt of given enough hints!

YES! I've seen this guy a few times and his appearance and expressions look EXACTLY like John Ritter, except obviously more disturbed looking

Not to mention that Jennifer Carpenter's character, who we must assume was traumatized in much the same way as the other girls, must eventually be released back into the world by "daddy" and she is well adjusted enough to not only join the police force but get promoted up the chain to detective. I realize many people don't like tidy endings but this movie would have been much better served to skip the twist and have Cusack either save his daughter or die trying without adding his partner to the mix of psychos.

Dallas Roberts reminded me of John Ritter too, until I realized he played Milton Mamet of Woodbury in The Walking Dead.

Lol are you being serious or trolling? How did you not see it coming?! It was made blatantly obvious tht Kelsey was involved in some way with the guy pretty early on!...

1) massive hint when there was a random scene of kelsey moving some boxes in her house then camera zoomed in on "fertility problem/guide" books! Then 20 mins later we see thst the abductor is obsessed with making babies.... Put two and two together?!

2) The scene were she started going on a about a girl from her hometown who went missing and there was nobody to put up fliers for her! Combine this with when Cusack tells his wife tht "she has nobody to go to for Thanksgiving" ....put two and two together?! At same time there was the flashbacks of the abductor driving along highway and picking up his first "love"...again it was obvious it was Kelsey!

3) the constant phonecalls she made and it never showing who was on the other line! Again obvious tht she was talking to the killer and giving him warning

4) her desperation to keep cusack away from the black guy when he first went to him and interrogated him

I loved the ending. The twist was pretty predictible, but still an interesting twist. However, the ending with Cusack's character dying and Carpenter's character getting away made it better because I doubt anyone expected that to happen.

Heh... Okay everybody, I truly DO think it's great and I honestly appreciate the consideration of just about everyone here in cloaking their comments in 'Spoilers'; usually people do NOT do that and they must of course all die slow, horrible deaths!

BUT... uh, just a thought. The NAME of the thread is, uh... *cough, 'THE ENDING'; so, not to be TOO much of a smart@ss, but I think in this ONE case it's pretty obvious that we are gonna be discussing...

THE ENDING!

Sorry, just could not resist... Anyway, as to the OP's original thought, yeah, I'm kinda on the fence on this one (and it is KILLING my balls! ) Overall I thought TECHNICALLY and competence wise that the film was made well. The story and pacing were very gripping and intense. I must admit that the ending DID indeed catch me completely with my d * c k in my hand (HEY, what I do on my own personal time is my business!) and was totally a surprise, BUT, all in all I think you are basically right that the ending just wasn't really quite up to the standards of the rest of it. I don't really think that the movie really sucked per se, especially compared to many, MANY much more poorly done films, but as much as I like John Cusack and yeah, he did a good job, still, he DID kinda look like he was pretty much sleepwalking through it all...

I have over 4000 films, many of them very rare and OOP. I LOVE to trade. PLEASE ASK!
