How would it have been different if Woody Allen had done it?

A number of critics, like Roger Ebert, compared this to early Woody Allen material. An insecure guy surrounded by odd people taking themselves too seriously. And one critic even compared Madeleine to the spunky Annie Hall.
I think Allen might have directed it very much like this, but of course if he had cast himself in it there would have been more punch lines and attempts to impress the woman.

Young Woody Allen would have been great as Adrian--less seething and more woebegone. As a director he would have made a film that was less stark, a little more ragged but warmer. Characters like Madeleine would be a a tad more vulnerable, maybe. On the other hand, he might not have been quite as imaginative with the visual gags about the pretensions of the art scene. I'm thinking of the sounds of Madeleine's leather clothing, the stuffed penguins, the buckets, etc.

Scarlett Johansson would've starred in it

It certainly would have been far less enjoyable.

With Woody, it would have been more 'laugh out loud' funny, but without him, it is more 'a chuckle here and there', and I think that the latter, is far more cogent.

Anybody can mock The Avant Garde, but this film shows an understanding of this culture, and yet it still can make us laugh.

SPINAL TAP this ain't, and thank God it isn't.

"I would prefer not to...."

reply

Exactly, sire.

Spinal Tap mock's progressive rock without really understanding it. Still a funny movie.
