Im not trying to come off as overly critical when i give my comments about this movie. My father is a popular local movie reviewer and I am a huge horror movie buff, from low to high budget. I have seen incredibly bad like "Darkness" to very good like "The Deaths of Ian Stone". I know the issues with horror movies. I only give my opinion because this movie showed promise but seemed to lack follow through.
My main problem with this movie is it slacked in places that I thought should have been incredibly locked down. Every line delivered felt like my local community theater's children's plays. The laughs from the characters felt forced and everything just seemed to lack "heart". James Kyson-Lee started off not being too bad but as the movie creeped along seemed to almost give up on being believable. George Stults seemed to change between emotions like a pms-ing pregnant, hungry, bear. First he has values and doesn't want the girl, then he does, then he is a hero, then he gets shot, but he is ok. After he is hurt he turns to Megan to ask if Jerry has shot Samantha. He says, "He killed her didn't he". The line is said like he is blurting out the answer on a game show, I would think a person would show a bit more grief. It just became real hard to believe. Danielle De Luca seemed like she really could have cared less about her boyfriend, her baby, or dying in the mountians. At times it almost was painfull to watch these characters who seemed to be stuck in "read through" mode. I felt, at times, like I was watching the rough draft of this movie.
It seemed like there could have been things to make the special effects or costuming come off as more thrilling. I understand special effects cost money, which most films don't have, but these problems can be helped in the editing process. The cut after Jerry finds Mike in the snowcat just showed that the film could make you jump, if the editing was done right. Cut 2-3 frames from the walking scenes of the dead girl and she would have come off as very frightening. Instead she looked like a girl with a really good halloween costume, trick-or-treating through my movie. There could have been a little more insight into Jerry going crazy as well. It felt like he just saw these ghosts the whole time but said "*beep* telling people about them, Im just going to be anti-social." It is only once he starts capping people do you realize that he has flipped his wig. The scenes are beautiful and the plot really struck me when I read it on netflix. I was just real dissapointed when the movie was finished, which by the way...It's bad when the last character LITERALLY has to say..."Yes, it's over."
I know this has gone on long enough, Im just hoping that in some way I can help to make the next movie that's made, a little bit better. Basically I would just say, play with the editing more, keep them from getting an extremely good look at your phantom characters, otherwise, they are just actors in costume instead of thrilling tools in a horror movie. Speed their movements up, cut frames from their shots, keep them suspenseful. Don't have them knock on glass. And the last thing, demand a little "heart and soul" from your actors. They are talented and experienced performers, they should have acted like it.
