Do female revenge films like these degrade or empower women?

There is a lot of debate over these kinds of films and one topic is whether or not these films centered on revenge can be called empowering or feminist or if they encourage too much inappropriate responses to violence against women to be truly empowering.

Some people believe that a film that truly empowers women would have them deal with injustice, oppression and mistreatment simply by healing, moving on and living a fulfilling life. And that these films don't do anything at all for women because they still make it more about the *beep* who wronged them than about the victims.

Others point out that there is a fine line between vengeance and justice and what one calls vengeance another calls justice. And that deep down, even if we consider ourselves pacifists, nonviolent, feminists, social justice types, we all have a desire to extract this kind of vengeance on those who hurt us and it is purely natural to use these movies as a catharsis of sorts.

This debate has been going on for years, ever since the first I Spit on Your Grave came out in 1978. And it has resulted in interesting, to say the least, debates that sometimes end up as flame wars. The original I Spit On Your Grave has been called both a feminist horror film of sorts and an anti feminist horror film of sorts too. I imagine that the same could be said for the 2010 remake.

Which side of the debate do you take?

They are definitely degrading to men.

Where's the male empowering revenge movie. Films like this make me think women are incredible insecure about men to the point that films showing all men as dumb evil women-hating bastards that deserve the women torturing and murdering them as positive messages and does not show women who love this "message" in a positive light.

Imagine if it was men cheering a man torturing and killing women and men saying how empowering it is.

I guess for me these types of films degrade the women watching and making these films not empower them.

Where's the male empowering revenge movie.

Every movie ever. Idiot.

What? That’s pretty hilarious.

Throughout history, men have subjugated and oppressed women, but yes, “revenge movies” (which are usually directed men btw), show that women are the insecure ones.

I'm a dude and found it hilarious how bunch of emo losers tried to do some ritual... seriously. How can someone be that stupid, living in a fairy world...

It's easy for who do not face discrimination to tell a group that does how to handle it. If during the civil rights movement, some white people said "Hey, you guys should stay quiet, don't be too loud or show any violence at all, it makes us respect you less" those people would look like they lack empathy for what the other people go through.
Also, revenge is a common solution in films, even when a more peaceful action can be achieved. I guess people want justice and finality, even if it is overly violent without a good message on how to actually forgive or settle situations without hurting others or yourself further. Male and female characters both do this, but apparently when men are shown as enacting violent solutions, no one bats an eye. But when a female character decides to get revenge on someone who has wronger her, it is inappropriate.
Also, men do not need empowering films, since they are already everywhere. Male empowerment permeates through most of society, and it has been this way for centuries. So saying "where's the male empowerment films" is a little silly to say if you really cannot be objective and see what you already have in comparison to others.

How is this "female revenge?" She's made into a succubus and eats men. Then she also says she kills women. Needy kills Jennifer. Who is getting revenge on men? Needy killed the band because they were murderers. They could be any sex.

I'd say this movie neither degrades or empowers women. The heroes and villain are teenage girls which makes for an interesting change. But you just can't take it seriously and it's not "real" enough.

And I don't think a movie like this could be called feminist at all. It's full of unattainable body images, impossible standards, gender tropes and cliche behaviour.

Not to say that 60 years ago this would have been called pornographic. It definitely is a titillating movie. Nothing wrong with that, but I wouldn't say viewers drooling over underage teenage girls an empowering feminist message.

It was a fun movie though.

This is not a vengeance movie ... I spit on Your Grave and the Charles Bronson movies fit into that category. Jennifer murdered innocent people that did nothing wrong to her. The only part you could take for revenge is at the end when you know Needy was going to kill the band that started all the problems.

Empowering "women" movies for me would be Norma Rae, The Color Purple, Places in the Heart, etc.

Perhaps this discussion could be repeated on a board for a film that's actually about a woman or women revenging themselves on men who did them wrong.

This here is a film about two women fighting each other.

It is. The OP has posted on several subforums.

They do neither. They're just dumb movies.
