First Cannes Review....not good

With academy award winner, Brie Larson, leading the way and Cannes juror, Donald Sutherland, following suit, Basmati Blues was highly anticipated by viewers and critics alike. The Bollywood inspired film told the story of Rice 9, a genetically modified crop. The film had the power to tell a story, focusing itself around an acute issue facing our society.

It completely failed to do so. The musical took on the world of GMO's and lacked any sort of severity to the point of disrespect. I assume Larson owed writer/director, Dan Baron, a favor and lowered her standard to fit the role she was given.

The romance between Larson and Utkarsh Ambudkar is contrived. The dialogue is cliché and not worthy of the subject. The musical numbers posses a completely different aesthetic, providing no harmony within the scope of the film.

Don't take anything I say too seriously though, I walked out after 45 minutes.

Inexcusably terrible. Basmati Blues is a losing combination of cringeworthy, cliche-ridden writing, forced romance, a non-self-aware Disney Channel Original Movie plot, terrible editing, weak characters, and the most obnoxious, over-enthusiastic musical theater-esque performances imaginable. Brie deserves so much more than this, and Donald Sutherland should know better by this point in his career.
