Just seen Three And Out - enjoyed it, much to my surprise!

Having watched the trailer earlier in the day, I went to the preview screening with thoughts of cheap Brit comedies in my head and fearing the worst.
To my great delight, the film's far, far better than the trailer suggests, and is certainly not the knockabout, cheap-laughs kind of comedy I was expecting - as it's running time goes on, the themes get more and more serious, and, while the laughs are still there, the twist(s) came as a genuine surprise to me, and the film's all the better for it's move into a more thoughtful sphere.
The only bad word I have for it is the middle section sags a bit when the 'action' moves to Coniston, but that's a minor gripe.
I'd recommend Three And Out - and that's saying something, 'cos I'm usually more of a Bladrunner/Saving Private Ryan fan.

Thanks for the review. Nice to hear something about the actual movie instead all the palaver in the press about supposedly making fun of suicides & such.

2/5 in Empire who are famous for giving British films one more star than they deserve.

Haven't seen it yet but it sounds like a typical lame Brit gimmick comedy. Maybe its just terrible marketing but the idea seems to promise a story of very little depth or imagination.

Then why not save your comment until you have seen it? Typical bollocks reply!

The users comment is just as relevant as somebody who has seen the film, these comments are useful in undertanding why some films do badly.

reply

Just what we like to read. Vacuous comments from some tw@t who hasn't seen the movie yet.

It's actually quite funny. A chick flick or date movie for sure, but it's a nice feel-good film and good to see MC playing a person rather than a mentaloid. Perhaps if his movie career doesn't work out they could do a tv series of morally dangerous 'what would you do?'s... We can see the PR works!

Exactly the opposite. Very down to earth film, I was very surprised, I thought it would be good for a couple laughs but it was quite moving. I'm not even sure what to rate this film, anything lower than a 6 seems not to be right, and yet I can't bring myself to rate it higher, because I usually avoid dramatic movies. This one had a real depth of heart and character, hate to say it but I loved it.

Your so very very wrong. I had the same misconceptions -I bought it for a measly Pound, brand new from a cheap shop. It was a rainy afternoon, I just wanted something to pass the time.
What a pleasant surprise it was- sharp dialogue, great editing and direction and some fantastic performances, especially from Colm Meany and Imelda Staunton.
It really is their film, some of the scenes between them are very moving and realistic.
Honestly, this film has depth, twists and suprises. Not many films can make me cry, but this one did -twice.
Please see it and let me know if you agree?

Well, Empire got it wrong, and as much as I admire the magazine, recently I have begun to think more and more that they are not infallible. Eagle Eye - nothing more than an average film, and they gave it **** , for example! How can they justify that?!

For me, Three and Out sits comfortably in the 3-star range, and it's close to being more than that...

... and, for what it's worth, I hated the Imelda Staunton bits...

It's made from bits of real panther, so you know it's good...

reply

agreed. its a great film. people should lighten up a bit, its not about suicide. its about the relationship between the two lead characters.

reply

The start is good
The middle section in coniston is far too long. half our cinema left in the middle. it get's better though towards the end.

reply

i was also positive surprised. didn't expect much after seeing the preview. but i quite liked it. and never did i think that they were glorifying anything, so see the movie before you give a crap comment.

This film doesn't deserve the negative hype it's getting. I find it staggering that this film is being singled out as being insenstive when there have been countless films before it that have been a hundred times more tastless/insensitive etc. Look up the meaning of 'black comedy' for goodness' sake - comedy that uses dark or unpleasant subject matter as it's basis!

The whole tube / suicide thing is merely the MaGuffin for what I found to be a well-acted, decently-written (if clumcily shot/edited) British drama-comedy (Also, anything that has Gemma Arterton in it (topless, no less) is worth my time and money.) It's not Oscar material of course, but I've seen much worse this year alone. I actually found the ending quite moving. See it before labelling it negatively.

reply

i don't get the negativity.

I was expecting some sort of slapstick rubbish, and when he goes looking for a victim thats kind of what I got. But from the moment the two leads meet, the film becomes a very entertaining flick and was thoroughly enjoyable.

only just watched the film (credits rolled less than 5 minutes ago ;))

i have to agree it wasnt what i had expected but a lot more than that, having heard the comments about making fun of suicide i couldnt see that at all, what i got was a very earthy film with some very good black comedy jokes. MC did some good acting here aswell, especially towards the end as we see the look on his face. I could recomend this film to most people. Small cast makes you concentrate on the people who the story is actually about rather than a cast of people that have nothing to do with it....

i gave it an 8...

"The number you have dialled is imaginary, please rotate your phone 90 degrees and try again"

reply

This film has nothing to do with suicide and i feel sorry for everyone who was part of making this film because they deserved alot more than £100,000 in takings ,all because of some silly bad hype.

this film has nothing to do with suicide, its very funny and very moving film , mainly between the two starring actors.

i loved it...

I too have just finished watching this film, and now have a headache from the laughing and the crying, which I wasnt expecting.

I loved it

I liked it. It really reminded me of Dream With The Fishes but that's all good.
